It always amused me when every single article about American Idiot would describe how much the band had changed by saying they'd gone from writing songs about jerking off to writing a rock opera. Like no they haven't quite stopped that yet4 points

So "KFAD/Shout" from BIAB came up on my MP3 player and it took me back to Christmas of that year. I got BIAB as a gift and I remember rushing to my room to watch it after everyone was done opening gifts. It brought so much happiness and glee. I was glued to the screen and trying to soak up every moment. And when KFAD came on, I'd never seen anything like it at the time. And of course, my friend and I would obsess over the infamous "Somebody Fuck Me!" moment. So listening to the track brought a huge smile to my face.4 points

I dunno. I take Billie at his word when he says he gets no inspiration from Trump. TCB sort of was the album that prophecized the breakdown that would lead to Brexit and Trump and it did. Also everything about social media. Say what you will, but Billie has had a penchant for writing exceptional political commentary for the last couple generations and I include not just AI and TCB in that. I mean when he was in the micro (as opposed to the macro) when writing at his youngest with songs like WTP, that song I was thinking about and I wonder if mentally he has actually ever left that place. The line It makes me wonder why I'm still here For some strange reason it's now Feeling like my home And I'm never gonna go Did he ever go? Obviously he left the slums but did he ever leave that frame of mind? Of course he grew up and became a man and looks at the world with more wisdom than "this shit hole is my home and I like it even still" but maybe he sort of thinks of the Earth that way now? I was literally having this discussion with a friend of mine just yesterday. Has Billie ever left that mindset of WTP? Is the US now the slums? He wrote inwardly back then but the social commentary was also political by it's very existence and so many of his other songs were. Green Day, contrary to what many would say HAVE always preached social and political commentary going back to Kerplunk and up to RevRad. They just became less worried about how they would do it. What say you? In his mind, not his house, has Billie ever truly left the slums he likes to call his home? I say no. I think that what drives him to get out of his car and walk with the BLM movement and to chant on the VMAs and to write AI and to write TCB, RevRad is the exact same motivation that made him write WTP and what will for their next album. It's only a bonus that they/he just keeps getting better at writing it. I would say that AI, TCB, and RevRad are (and I am aware I am excluding the Trilogy for this comment) three of the best back to back albums ever released by any band in history. You would have to go back to The Beatles to even put up a contest in my mind. No small feat and it's not just my opinion. There are sales, streams, Broadway shows, headlining music festivals and a lot of other shit to back up my thoughts. I believe it is what has kept Billie grounded enough to get in the head of the average person is that he never flew over the rainbow like Axl Rose for example. Most celebrities lose their touch with reality. I work in a world of celebs in both music and TV and I can tell you that the majority are fucking head cases like you would not believe and that is why people like Jim Carey loses his ability to be as funny as when he was younger. Comedians are so often depressed, angry people and that's why they turned to comedy. Same goes for musicians. If you look at the personal history of most punk rock and even just general rock musicians you will find childhood heartache like a loss of a family member (Mike and Billie bonded over this) and I am glad that Billie has always stayed firmly with his feet on the ground because I would say that Jim Carey has indeed "left the slums" and it's harder for him now to find that stuff that makes him laugh. He is still a depressed person but now he has millions of dollars to find other outlets like TM and vision quests and shit but Billie still writes from the heart and when he says he will never write a song about Trump http://www.nme.com/news/music/green-day-reveal-theyd-never-write-song-donald-trump-1652852 , I believe him. I think he is motivated by the world that Trump has created but he doesn't want to give his mic to him and thank god for it. *EDIT (By the way, most good stories have a "point of no return" as noted by the works of Joseph Campbell where something terrible happens which sends the "hero'" on a journey. Think of any Disney princess movie and there is almost always a parental figure, or actual parent (or both) in G-Rated Disney movies who perish somewhere within the first 20 minutes. Almost ALL of them. Same goes with most films. It's called "The Hero's Journey". Luke loses his father much earlier, lives with his uncle who then dies by the Empire so he goes with OB-1 when at first he was saying no. In Frozen, the death of Anna's parents lead them to a life of isolation and fear from Elsa for the damage she's done to her sister. Lion King, Mufossa dies and Simba runs away to live a life of no care (H'Kuna Matadda), Spider Man, Uncle Dies, he sets out for revenge. I could go on forever and might already have but the point is the all great journey's start with a point of no return whether it's real life or a film. Losing his father, living in the slums, and everything else is what lead Billie and Mike down the path to where they are now. I wasn't trying to bring up BOBD but certainly you can hear it in that last sentence. First time I ever met Mike and Tre was at a music store in Tampa Florida in I think 1993-4 (I've told this story here) and even then I was amazed at how grounded they were. Admittedly, I was much younger and you think "i see them on MTV, they must be rich and famous" and I was amazed they were hanging with some chick in her beat up car with no radio and even that Tre was there to buy sticks. I remember thinking, "why would YOU need to buy sticks?, don't you have someone to buy them for you?" and I actually did ask him that and he laughed his ass off at the notion and mind you Dookie had just been released at this time. I think Mike is one of the nicest people you could ever meet and if you ever have the opportunity, you would see that but I think it is Billie who has truly never lost even an inkling of his edge and even after getting sober that is a pretty amazing fact. I am rambling now but stay in the slums Billie, we need the music. EDIT 2: I think it is important to say that in Joseph Campbell's work of "The Hero's Journey", the final act is always the "Conflict Resolution". Luke blows up the death star. Anna figures out that the answer is to love her sister. Simba goes back to be King and save the Tribe. Etc. It might be a stretch of a parallel but perhaps we are getting into the conflict resolution part of his career. Certainly he resolved some conflicts over the last several years and wrote about it in RevRad. I'm thoroughly interested to know what he will be writing about exactly in the next album.3 points

Yeah, that's the one bright spot. Isn't it funny though that his kids were born in February (when Billie was born) and September (when his father died). It's almost this supernatural link he has with September. September was also the month of his rehab of course and the month Green Day was kicked out of Gilman.2 points

But we will get a nice Forever Now video, hopefully with the boys in it. Plus Billie promised us some more remixes and that Foxboro Hottubs show, we'll see2 points

I agree so much with LaughingClock and DesensitizedBrat but don't want to fill the page quoting them! First, thanks for the info, we get you are trying to share but protect sources too, I certainly am grateful for your insight. I would be really surprised if they didn't tour Japan unless their financial problems make it difficult, are any other bands touring Japan these days? Nobody I follow is that I know of. Also, re Billie and his writing, I can't see him specifically referencing Trump, I don't think he would want to limit/date their material like that, nor give Trump the credit. He has said this around the time of the election and I think he will stick with it. I think he will always firmly feel like he belongs with the 99% regardless of his bank balance, it's just who he is and you can see how grounded he is in many ways I feel, long may it continue! Lastly Revrad is awesome, I love it and I was listening to Insomniac today which I love but hadn't played for a while and I can see the progression in so much of their music, I love it, love it all2 points

He talks about it here at 2.20, sounds pretty genuine/certain : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyBq1p4H7BM. I agree you'd think they would've announced something by now but surely it's not too late? @LaughingClock that's some analysis, I enjoyed that!2 points

Yeah, me too but I have to disagree with the low DB intros. It still gets me every time. You can just hear Billie saying "Ok, we need these fuckers to listen this loud. Let's start it at Xdb and blow them away with the real Ydb. Bang Bang is a great example of it. One of the best. Every single time I listen to the song, I get a blast on the riff. Some people incorrectly chalk that to bad production but in reality, it's Billie doing what the fuck he wants. Sure, I would love an over-produced album as well. I love Cavallo and Vig. Frankly, I would love for them to get Rubin in the studio as people have said many many times, but I would also LOVE to see Rob back in there or I would be happy if they did it themselves again. Let's put it this way, I have NEVER, not once been unhappy with a Green Day album. I love Nightlife even and the Trilogy gets not enough love (my joke meme aside). You take some songs like X-Kid, Brutal Love, Basterds, Lazy Bones, Stay The Night, Stray Heart, Nuclear Family, Fuck Time (really I consider this a FBHT song), and you have a GREAT FUCKING album but they released all their B-sides because its Green Day and that's what they wanted to do. Moment of honest, when I first heard RevRad, I didn't love it as much as I do now. I liked it and thought for some of the songs that they just dialed it in but then as I started to learn the songs, the lyrics, the breaks, the things that you grow to love it became my second favorite Green Day album. (I never call a Green Day album my favorite so calling it my second favorite means it's currently my favorite) because my favorite literally changes all the time. It's almost embarrassing to be such a fan of a band as I am with Green Day. As I've said before, embarrassing to be a middle aged male young fan girl in the world I live in. Yeah, he totally would but he also knows more than MOST among us. As I said, he's an iconic figure in the history of the band and hears more that some because of it. Ah, why not? It made me happy.2 points

The boys will be going directly into the studio when the current tour is over. They will take a short break and record what is being leaked through some sources saying they think the stuff they've been writing on this tour will be one of their most ambitious and best work to date. Of course they think that but you heard it here and it is coming from a direct source. Lot's more Green Day in our future guys. I don't know if this counts as "news" but I didn't know where to put it.2 points

The only other place they hinted at going to still was Japan but there's been no announcement so maybe that was just talk (I don't even remember where it was now). Even if they go, it could just be a single week trip and not another leg of a tour, so it shouldn't cut into studio time much in 2018, even if you also include the odd summer festival either here or down under. So as RevRad came out in Fall 2016 and assuming they have nearly all of 2018 for studio time (and have already started writing and recording demos), we could conceivably see a release by early 2019 which as @LaughingClock said is a mere 2.5 years or less from the last album. What I like about this timeline is that Fall 2019 is also the 15th anniversary of AI. So a summer Reading show playing the whole album like they did with Dookie could be a real possibility.1 point
