YES. 21CB is a masterpiece, which makes it all the more of a shame when it's largely ignored during live shows. I get that Christian and Gloria are very similar to JOS and St. Jimmy, two sides of the same coin, but they're not as dramatized and BIG. They're all Billie, essentially, but he strikes deeper on 21CB. The struggle to keep fighting in Viva La Gloria, the absolute madness of Christian's Inferno. He paints a picture of personal conflict first and foremost, at least for me, which is a triumph on such a massive album. And he lets hope finish the story, ending with See the Light, whereas AI closes on a heartbreaking note. It's not overly sappy and optimistic, he's just not done trying yet. And the lyrics - the distilled anger in American Eulogy and the multiple spitfire verses on Peacemaker. They only impress me more now, after so many years of listening.6 points

I don't think it was cashing in at all. From all the interviews and articles at the time it seems like it was a difficult album to make and they really dug deep emotionally and laboured over it, if they wanted to knock out a quick follow up to cash in on AI's success why wait five years and labour over the most complex music and lyrics they've made to date? I think it was a natural artistic progression, building on what they started with AI to make an even more ambitious and musically diverse album which does have some similarities but a lot of differences as well. AI is a political rock opera telling a story that you can follow from start to finish. 21st CB makes use of characters again but isn't a rock opera, there's really no storyline, and while it touches on some political points I couldn't call it a political album, it's much more personal. It's the most ambitious and impressive music they've made imo. Much more than a copy of AI, it might've been built on what they'd done before but they progressed on and took their musical ambition to another level.6 points

Totally disagree - 21CB has some of the best lyrics they have written. Shows how talented they are bringing this album out after the heights AI reached.5 points

You've won the thread Honestly couldn't disagree more. 21CB is, for me, their best work. I don't think it's similar to AI at all. I get a totally different vibe. AI is compact, packs a punch, tells a story and job done. 21CB is theatrical (I mean literally, it's in three acts), intricate and a lot more experimental. I love AI's lyrics but some in 21CB give me chills. As for some lines not making sense, tbh every album has some of those Cashing in on AI's success? Maybe. But I think it's better than AI so if that's what they did, fair play to them!4 points

As I've mentioned a few times in other threads (cause I can't point it out often enough ), I looooove the trilogy so much! Stop when the red lights flash, Fell for you (the new mix), Nuclear Family, Stay the night, Makeout Party, Brutal Love, Stray Heart, etc. are amongst my fav GD songs ever! Unfortunately I missed the "99 Revolutions" Tour, so I've never seen any of the trilogy songs played live which is the reason I cry myself to sleep every night.2 points

That's hardly why people hate it. I think hate is probably too strong of a word anyway in most cases. I don't dislike the trilogy because it's "cool to hate it," I dislike the trilogy as a whole for a variety of subjective reasons — too many songs released too quickly, without enough high-quality songs to justify that decision; the production isn't a sound I enjoy; I don't connect to the songs nearly as much as their other material, etc. — but that doesn't mean there aren't some songs I enjoy. I would really like to hear some trilogy songs played live, or some songs produced in a different way, similar to Revolution Radio's sound. But me being realistic and honest about the quality of most of the songs doesn't mean I hate the project as a whole. I just think it was a bad decision in the end to go forward with it the way they did.2 points

I wouldn't say I'm a huge fan of the trilogy but like a lot of people I just pick and choose the songs I like from each album and put them all together. I think certain songs had massive potential but the way it all happened seemed rushed and forced. There's a few songs (Troublemaker to name one) that I would turn off if they came on shuffle, but I enjoy a lot of them. It's mostly lyrics that bother me, there's a lot of unecessary 'fuck' in the entire thing and it gets to a point where it just feels like a filler and it's boring. But yknow, each to their own, I don't like a lot of 1039, it's cool to not be in the 'everything this band do is amazing' bubble sometimes1 point

I Know this is a very debatable topic, but in my honest opinion, the Trilogy is some of the boys' best work that they have done. Not to say AI and all their other albums weren't good, but the Trilogy just stood out because of how deep the songs were and how much i could connect to the songs on that album in a way such as missing you and fell for you. It's so hated by the Green Day community and i don't one bit understand why the albums are so hated. My personal favorite song right now is actually the most hated song on those albums "Nightlife". The bass is fun to play for a bass player such as myself and Lady Cobra and Billie's Vocals are so mellow and just good to listen to while laying in bed while casually playing guitar/bass. People tend to hate it because it's cool to hate it and never really never give a valid reason as to why they hate it so much. If I cant change your mind, this is ok, you do you, but the trilogy is gold and that will never change. Lowkey in love with the song Drama Queen right now.1 point

I spotted this too and added it to my watch-later-list, but it's not available anymore. The person seems to have deleted it and the channel seems to be gone also. That's so strange. And so sad.1 point

RockZone 105,9. I believe it's Prague-only but you can listen online. They love Green Day. I often hear them play trilogy songs, live recordings and sometimes other rare stuff like covers or State Of Shock. The fun part is that I didn't really know the song when I first heard it on the radio (might have listened to in once years ago), but when I heard the intro I was wide awake in a second, turning it up because "that's Billie playing" but my normal early morning reaction to Green Day is "oh wait I know this band, what's that, Nirvana?"1 point

I just don't like 21st Century Breakdown, at all. Everyone always gets mad at me for saying that! But I'm sorry, to me it is Green Day going 'oh hey political American Idiot did so well, let's do another similar concept political album', and for that reason it just seems artificial and over-written. Some of the lines don't even make any sense, they are just trying too hard to be political and concept-y. And the song 21st CB being in so many parts like JOS.... just seemed like cashing in on the trend they made basically.1 point

I think they're realistic reasons people would kill but not justified. So yeah it is kind of stating the obvious that they're ridiculous (because randomly shooting people is never going to be justified) but I think it's done in kind of a clever way, stating them in a silly manner rather than actually saying they're wrong/bad. The satire part is more about the phenomenon of people wanting to be famous at any cost even if it's for something bad, and people being allowed to achieve fame/almost become celebrities through committing murder.1 point

True This isn't really that depressing but you've just reminded me there's one where he talked about being grumpy all the time and said that Adrienne calls him Eeyore lol. Which would be like the most annoying thing to be called if you were in a grumpy mood.1 point

Could be an intentional play on words. Clever. I love that song, it's so theatrical.1 point
