Whatsername is one of the best album closers that I know.8 points

I can't stand any of the musical songs. I can't even get through the album because it makes me cringe so much (especially when it's the guys singing) . Just not a fan of that style of singing/performance at all.7 points

The only thing I don't like about Whatsername is that it, and therefore the whole of AI, ends with rhyming time with time. Other than that it's perfect.6 points
-
Whatsername is perfection. Lyrically, musically and vocally. I would die on the spot if they ever played it live at a show I'm going to. I think it's next to Still Breathing the most emotional GD song for me.6 points

Aw I think is very sweet of Billie to share these kind of personal things with us6 points

Did I just win the most unpopular opinion ever?! Seriously not one person agrees with me?!5 points

I don't think I heard you properly, did you just say Whatsername is overrated????? I used to like you. Seriously, I find it to be a beautifully simple song, but unbelievably powerful about reflection and maybe a bit of regret. I think it is one of Billie's best vocal performances ever, he absolutely nails the sentiment of the song. IMO one of the best songs he has ever written and performed.5 points

I used to dislike Whatsername and skip it when it came up, but I learned to appreciate and love it over the years Especially after hearing the musical version4 points

For me, the ending of Whatsername is definitely one of the most powerful moments in their whole discography. It gets me everytime I listen to it, don't want to imagine myself if I ever get to hear it live3 points

The whole "Remember, whatever..." part of Whatsername is one of the most beautiful and epic sounding parts in a Green Day song (similarly to "How low is this brutal love..." or "Hallelujah I found my soul under the sofa pillows..."). Before that is nothing special but the climax is worth waiting for!3 points

I just listened to Somewhere Now after taking a break from it for a few weeks, and I'm just so glad that they made that song, that it exists and it didn't end up somewhere in a drawer.2 points
-
I'm glad they did the musical because it was a great achievement for them and probably did a lot to inspire them creatively and expand their skills (eg I doubt we'd have a song like Brutal Love without it, Billie's singing and performance skills etc). Just don't personally enjoy it2 points

At least you get my reasons, that's something Thank you!2 points

Agreed! Brutal Love > almost all other Green Day songs in fact since it's at least one of my top 52 points

Especially Brutal Love! I think it's very overrated. (I feel like I've had this debate in this thread so many times, haha...)2 points

It's not an unpopular opinion but given FN and JOS were discussed here a lot I will add my 50 cents: Guys, to be honest, I've never been in such love with a Green Day song through my 12-years-greendayfan-experience as with Forever Now. It has every fucking thing I love Green Day for. It is as angry at parts as during the younger days, it is as reflexive as they became now, it is as epic as they sounded during AI - 21st CB days, it has this classic rock vibe which Billie adores and always wants to show his connection to it and it is simply PERFECT live.2 points

THIS! Whatsername was a grower for me. And I adore the musical version! The production I saw gave me chills. And I listen to songs from the Broadway recording all the time. I used to think musicals weren't my thing but AI showed me that not all musicals are glitzy jazz hands. And I've seen lots of different musicals since as a result - it's taken away my prejudice which can only be a good thing1 point
-
This ^ so much. I am not a fan of musicals. There's very few I can actually tolerate. I didn't really think AI should've been a musical, but I supported the guys because it was something they wanted to explore. I just remember seeing one musical performance on an award show...I want to say they did 21 Guns or something and I was like -_- I don't like this! A big part of it has to do with the style, I'm just not into it and the fact I'm so used to hearing Billie sing, hearing anyone else do vocals is just weird for me.1 point

I think Green Day's Dos record is very under appreciated. I'll admit that it's not my favorite like the Uno and Tre, but I do know the fact that many people don't like it as much.1 point
-
Unless you hate on AI and support Trump, that is You very well might I think it's estabilished that Whatsername is a fan favorite.1 point
-
That bit in Brutal Love is so perfect though! Without going into the rest of the song just when he sings that line it's one of those musical moments that's so right, all I'm saying.1 point

This made me laugh I kinda forgot that it's your username, although I know that it's your username I don't hate it, you'll even find me singing it sometimes, but it's just a normal song to me. Still Breathing and Lazy Bones are more emotional in my opinion.1 point

I think Whatsername is overrated. I don't see what's the big deal about it. It's okay just not that great.1 point

Very glad 21 Guns and especially WMUWSE are not being done. It's cool when it is September, and 21 Guns has had it's day. I don't see that one being pulled out again, if it is, certainly not in full.1 point

that might have been when Billie posted that he wanted to destroy the phrase "pop-punk" in 20161 point

I wasn't serious, to be honest. I can't think of any plausible reason why they don't play it other than they think SB and BOBD are enough.1 point

This made me chuckle Tré and Sara might be one of the coolest couples ever tbh1 point

That glorious moment when you hear your mom singing Green Day around the house. I trained her well1 point

I managed to catch Still Breathing on the radio for the first time in the car today and I almost screamed Poor mum who was driving had a moment of panic because she thought I saw something on the road or whatever. It just made me really happy1 point

Anyone notice in the RevRad CD booklet that in the picture where Tre is holding the boombox on his shoulder, he scratched X-BASS off of the right speaker completely and X-B off of the left speaker so the left speaker just sais ASS. What a guy, I love that type of shit!1 point

Is it allowed to love JOS and Forever Now likewise? I don't think it's possible to say which one is "better" because they are totally different. Some of you already pointed that out and I agree 100%. JOS is definitely one of the best songs they've ever made in terms of storytelling: When I hear JOS I always see the story like a movie in my head, it's like immerging into the world of the Jesus of Suburbia, watching him, feeling with him. Listening to Forever Now and Somewhere Now (which I also kind of see as one song), on the other hand, is like immerging into Billie's world, it's like reading his biography. Many GD songs are autobiographical, I know, but none of them has ever been so plain and so honest ("My name is Billie and I'm freaking out!"). Billie isn't hiding behind an alter ego here, he's telling us his story himself. That is a big difference and takes a lot of courage. I think both JOS and FN/SN have some of the greatest Green Day lyrics we've ever gotten. That's true, and I usually prefer live songs with a higher "entertainment factor", too, but I think JOS doesn't need that. It's so great that it stands for its own. Seeing it live almost feels like some religious or spiritual experience for me; it feels so heavy and important that it doesn't need any fireworks or speeches, the interruption would probably even ruin it. It'll always be one of my (live) favourites.1 point
-
Lol that's like my favourite line in FN When it comes to how a song makes you feel, it doesn't matter the quality of lyrics. I think the FN lyrics are brilliant though so *shrugs*1 point
-
Don't hate me, but I agree. JOS is an amazing song, I just don't think it is as epic as its reputation. I really can't add anything to what Hermione said. She described my feelings about the song perfectly. Just think, if they removed it from the set list, they can fit in 3 Insomniac songs.1 point
-
JOS is cool live, not least because of how into it the band and crowd is, but really all they do is play it . Nothing wrong with that but a song as long as that just played straight through will never be one of my favourites. There's so many AI songs on the setlist and for me it's probably the least entertaining of them so I wouldn't mind it going at all. I much prefer Forever Now (and the even better Somewhere Now) to JOS. JOS is an epic coming of age story perfectly told in five parts so I can't fault it and can see why it's so well liked, but I'm not attached to it emotionally like Forever Now/Somewhere Now. Even though JOS is written from personal experience the fact it's told through characters and is based on experiences way in the past means it'll always be slightly detached, whereas Forever Now is directly, currently, purely personal. JOS is a dramatic story and relatable in a universal "everyone who's been a teenager can relate to it" way, but for me that doesn't compare to FN/SN's deeply honest and emotional stripped down lyrics that couldn't be more personal. They're completely different really so I don't know if you could say which is "better" but I definitely like Forever Now more.1 point
-
JOS I wouldn't mind in the slightest if they dropped it from the setlist. It's a great song, like most Green Day songs are, but it's far from my favourite, even on the setlist. I actually was expecting AWTW/St Jimmy to be dropped but was pleasantly surprised when they played it. I dunno if it's a popular opinion or not but I adore Are We The Waiting. Also I'd be gutted if they cut Holiday and BOBD. Those two songs were my introduction to GD (on the music channels, BOBD was everywhere and Holiday had just been released.) They mean a lot to me.1 point
