Green Day give update on ‘surreal, offensive’ ‘American Idiot’ movie Last month, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong confirmed to NME that the long-awaited film had been given the ‘green light’ by US network HBO, and that he’d be reprising his role at St Jimmy from the Broadway and West End musical. The movie adaptation of their seminal 2004 politically-charged album has been long-rumoured since the records release, before reports emerged in 2011 of Tom Hanks wanting to produce it, before the film was finally confirmed in 2013 and playwright Rolin Jones revealed he was ‘finishing up’ the script back the following year. Now, the band have given an update on how the project is taking shape. “HBO is into it, and now we’re dealing with a re-write right now and it’s going good,” Billie Joe Armstrong told NME. “I think it’s going to be a lot different from the musical. It’s kind of, more surreal but I think there’s going to be parts of it that might offend people – which is good. I think it’s a good time to offend people.” Armstrong continued: “I think there’s just going to be a lot of imagery that we couldn’t pull off in the musical in the stage version. You know, I don’t want to give away too much, but it will be shocking in a way which makes you think.” http://www.nme.com/news/music/green-day-give-update-on-surreal-offensive-american-idiot-movie-1860372#lgwhJtcHWCY6HUel.994 points

This is not true at all. I love when it's time and still breathing. my favourite album is Insomniac and I love heavy music.2 points

So Youngblood was written "a long time ago". I wonder during which era. Maybe for Cigarettes and Valentines since they were talking about that?2 points
-
I wonder if "shocking" means like Jesus/religious imagery gone wrong---kinda like that art we saw of BJA on the cross or whatever. IDK, it's cool but I'd rather see something that focuses more on the emotion and less on the shock-value.2 points

The album is a masterpiece. The musical did it justice and I hope that the movie is treated the same way. It needs to hit hard like the album. It would be nice if Tre and Mike were in it as well but not totally needed.2 points

Idk, if my dad just casually played us Christian's Inferno after a perfectly normal Sunday family diner all like "hey fam, look what I came up with this morning", I'd be pretty creeped out.1 point
-
I mean it could be both. Could include shocking etc stuff but for legitimate artistic reasons/not in a gratuitous way. Also didn't Billie like to kind of talk up how risque the musical was in places even though it really wasn't bad? And he's done the same describing Green Day songs before as well (talking about Christian's Inferno as if it's this totally shocking song that wouldn't be suitable for his kids to hear springs to mind). I think he tends to exaggerate how shocking things are a bit . But I like the idea of it being as adult/explicit as it needs be rather than something toned down anyway.1 point
-
Exactly, I'm not Christian but I was kind of offended on behalf of Christians because, exactly, it just feels like you're trying to offend people without much of a purpose when you do stuff like that (kind of like, if you know that drawing the Prophet Muhammad is offensive, why are you intentionally doing it?). I wouldn't mind more graphic sex/drugs, so hopefully that's what he means. But even with that, there's no reason to make it gratuitous. I'm not trying to see a porno here. Tell the story.1 point
-
I hope not. I'm not religious and didn't feel a tad offended by that fanart but it's a cheap way to provoke. So yeah, you're right.1 point

The first time I did this was agonising enough, and that was before I had let RevRad sink into my bones. I admire the ability some of you have to churn these out so fast Will have a ponder and try to construct a new setlist1 point

Great! Wasn't particularly excited for just a movie version of the musical (other than seeing Billie in it ), this sounds much more interesting!1 point

That;s because no one knows what the fuck Billie Joe is saying. When I first became a fan I couldn't for the life of me figure out where the whole "rage and love" came from. Then I listened to JOS again and finally heard "I'm the son of rage and love" and not the "Imma sunna raichu la" or whatever the hell I though he was saying.1 point

And I swear to god: I WASN'T DRUNK OR STONED! Because everyone asks me :"How much did u smoke before the gig?!" The truth is that the emotions and the feelings are so strong that you don't even believe that you are there, so I was living a dream in my head1 point

Oh, great question. Bass isn't simple. It's not like "you have to play just one note". It's more difficult than that. Strings are thicker and the distance between frets is higher, so you need a good left hand trained to move up and down the neck. The main difficulty that I found was in using the pick, because you have to develop a fluid movement of your wrist in order to maintain the same intensity in the sound. I play the bass and I can tell you that, between all the instruments I learned to play (violin and drums), this is my favorite because you can feel the music inside your body. So, go with the vibrations.1 point

New picture of Billie in this week's Kerrang (sorry it's not better quality but I don't have a scanner):1 point

I would easily take 1000 Hours over When It's Time, the latter's lyrically just so simplistic and uninteresting.1 point

I'm a guitar player who knows a few basslines and I'd recommend learning at least some, if nothing else it makes you a better guitar player.1 point

Hmm not for me. For me their super sappy love songs are a special case, I like them because it's cute to hear Billie's sappy teenage thoughts on love and it's impressive that he's willing to show them so openly, so it's kind of a nostalgia thing with the old love songs and when he harks back to them on sappier new songs. I don't really associate them with their most top 40 friendly songs (they still show emotions but don't tend to be quite so sappy), which I usually like but not especially. But in both cases it's more the baring of emotions that's impressive than the pop sound. Plus I don't think it's necessarily about really liking a punk sound or a pop sound. Ever since they started they blended pop with punk and for me it's both elements together that give them their appeal, the punk sound and attitude is cool but the pop elements that they weren't afraid to add to it make them a much more interesting band. And likewise if they'd gone for only pop they wouldn't be nearly as interesting either. Both elements are important.1 point

I swear I could listen to the bass of When I Come Around for hours I've never paid as much attention to it as I am on my headphones right now and I'm swooning so much. Mike Dirnt appreciation post.1 point

Damn I wish. I like to think I know myself inside and out, but I have no clue what I'd do if put in the presence of them... I don't even know what I'd say or how I'd react. I (hope) I'd act chill and awesome, but the chances are I'd be grovelling at their feet, bawling something along the lines of 'thank you' and 'you are god.'1 point

So random, but I was listening to "X Kid", my favorite from the Trilogy and thought how perfect that song would have been on Revolution Radio, with that mixing, engineering, and in the thematic context of Revolution. It's just a great song and it got lost in the incoherent, underproduced jumble of the Trilogy. It would have fit perfectly on Revolution Radio. Just my opinion.1 point

It's bad that no one asks them about the album or music in general but only about trump...they are musicians not politicians or journalists even If I agree with them.1 point

That vinyl looks so killer signed by the three of them. Doesn't get much cooler than that!1 point

Sorry if this this has already been shared, but Kerrang radio say GD will be in the studio on Wednesday morning. Looks like they are back in Paris though from Britt's IG.1 point

The whole show is 1 1/2 hours if they take out 21CB it will be shortened to acommercial. Have you seen the show? It is the most exciting show I've ever seen. 21 guns is one of the best scenes in broadway ever. Lnoe was so beautiful on stage if they take out 21cb, it won't be the same show1 point

He kinda blew me away playing St. Jimmy on Broadway. He was very emotive, and added a lot of little details to the performance that fleshed the character out. And for the singing side of the performance, he was amazing. I went with my parents and my mom was thinking he wouldn't stack up well next to classically trained Broadway singers, but to this day she talks about how incredible he sounded. I think it's cool that he likes trying other creative outlets, whether it is acting or just trying out a different genre like he did with Norah Jones. I love that he's open to trying new things and doesn't limit himself to staying in one box. He's super talented, so he definitely should keep trying new things.1 point
-
Have you seen any footage of him playing St Jimmy on Broadway? He did a really good job of it, and this will be a film of the musical so I guess not too different. It's not really the same as a normal acting role as it's mostly a musical performance and it's basically just a bigger version of his own on stage persona (like when he performs St Jimmy with Green Day), so it comes to him more naturally. Can't get a much better role for him than a singing character that he created and is part himself! There's time for him to do things other than music, experiencing other things is part of life and if anything helps add to his creativity.1 point
-
He was good, you will enjoy the film. It is really cute.1 point

I would love to see Ordinary World, but in the trailer you can see he really fits the character of an ordinary man, living a simple life, a kid and a wife. He did the job pretty well. I can't comment on the whole movie as I have not seen it. But even after seeing the trailer, I can comment that Billie can act and I hope he does some lead roles.1 point
-
He was very good in Ordinary World. I agree with you, I would love to see him do more. I think he shows alot of potential, especially in more comedic roles. He was excellent in Haunted1 point
