Green Day give update on ‘surreal, offensive’ ‘American Idiot’ movie Last month, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong confirmed to NME that the long-awaited film had been given the ‘green light’ by US network HBO, and that he’d be reprising his role at St Jimmy from the Broadway and West End musical. The movie adaptation of their seminal 2004 politically-charged album has been long-rumoured since the records release, before reports emerged in 2011 of Tom Hanks wanting to produce it, before the film was finally confirmed in 2013 and playwright Rolin Jones revealed he was ‘finishing up’ the script back the following year. Now, the band have given an update on how the project is taking shape. “HBO is into it, and now we’re dealing with a re-write right now and it’s going good,” Billie Joe Armstrong told NME. “I think it’s going to be a lot different from the musical. It’s kind of, more surreal but I think there’s going to be parts of it that might offend people – which is good. I think it’s a good time to offend people.” Armstrong continued: “I think there’s just going to be a lot of imagery that we couldn’t pull off in the musical in the stage version. You know, I don’t want to give away too much, but it will be shocking in a way which makes you think.” http://www.nme.com/news/music/green-day-give-update-on-surreal-offensive-american-idiot-movie-1860372#lgwhJtcHWCY6HUel.995 points

That;s because no one knows what the fuck Billie Joe is saying. When I first became a fan I couldn't for the life of me figure out where the whole "rage and love" came from. Then I listened to JOS again and finally heard "I'm the son of rage and love" and not the "Imma sunna raichu la" or whatever the hell I though he was saying.3 points

Great! Wasn't particularly excited for just a movie version of the musical (other than seeing Billie in it ), this sounds much more interesting!2 points

Awesome! Can't wait. Shocking, and offensive is what I like in a movie. I wonder how much younger they will make him look if that is even possible.2 points

I've literally only just realised that in too dumb to die it says "lost somewhere over the rainbow, way up high". for he last month I have been singing "lost somewhere over the rainbow, hanging on to life"2 points

Awesome! I do hope they play Revolution Radio in it's entirety one day, or at least play all the songs at some point. We've still got songs from Kerplunk, Insomniac, Nimrod, Dos, Tre and not to mention Superhits and Shenanigans that we've never heard live. And let's face it, we probably never will. But it's not too late for RevRad. Just imagine "Say Goodbye", "Outlaws", "Too Dumb to Die" and "Troubled Times" live! Even ole' "Bouncing off the single wall" would be killer to see live!2 points

Right now, my ideal setlist would be RevRad in its entirety - I just love it so much and would love to hear it from start to finish Framed by a nice compilation of songs from each album/ep, including No One Knows, Macy's Day Parade, Whatsername, 21 Guns (*please*), Lights Out, Lazy Bones, Brutal Love and OF COURSE King for a day and Hitchin' a Ride2 points

I swear I could listen to the bass of When I Come Around for hours I've never paid as much attention to it as I am on my headphones right now and I'm swooning so much. Mike Dirnt appreciation post.2 points

I met Billie Joe in NYC during the whole St Jimmy / American Idiot musical era in 2010: Photo I was also picked to go on stage with the guys in Berlin 2012: Photo Most recent was this Saturday just gone, when I met Tre while I was out and about in London: Photo I've not met Mike at all, which I would absolutely love to do!2 points

Well I hope he's not kidding This can be either very good or very corny and even though I keep going on and on about how they should stop milking ai, I'm hoping for the best1 point

Oh, great question. Bass isn't simple. It's not like "you have to play just one note". It's more difficult than that. Strings are thicker and the distance between frets is higher, so you need a good left hand trained to move up and down the neck. The main difficulty that I found was in using the pick, because you have to develop a fluid movement of your wrist in order to maintain the same intensity in the sound. I play the bass and I can tell you that, between all the instruments I learned to play (violin and drums), this is my favorite because you can feel the music inside your body. So, go with the vibrations.1 point

So fun to play. I always focus on the bass. The first time I heard Outlaws I was like "wow, I could never expect that from you, Mike". As I said, that bass line is very easy, but the way he plays it... Fantastic. IMO between Too Dumb to Die and Troubled Times. It's like a gradual decrease of BPM from TDTD to TT1 point

I've posted this before, so sorry for the re-post but it was such an amazing story that I can't help sharing it again. I had tried to meet up with them again on the latest tour but our plans were derailed due to scheduling issues (still got to see two shows, but no backstage)...but I am really going to try for it again on the next leg of the US tour just to thank them for the amazing experience summarized below: I went to their show in Albany with my wife shortly after we were married in '09. Our wedding song was Last Night on Earth, and I like to think we were the first ever since the wedding was only a week after 21CB came out! We got to our hotel early (around 3pm) and decided to take a stroll and get some Starbucks. As luck would have it, we ran into Jason right outside Starbucks. The guy was cool as hell, we walked and talked about all kinds of awesome stuff (GD, PHGP, Network) and also mentioned that LNOE was our wedding song and we'd love to hear it. His reply was basically "that's so awesome, but we never play it live, so I'm not sure we can- I'll ask the guys". Well, we finished talking as he was coming up to their hotel, and their tour buses were right out front. He told us we could ask the rest of the guys if we wanted to hang tight by the buses. So naturally, we weren't going anywhere! Tre came out a few minutes later with a playstation strapped to his back. Standard Tre. I was almost numb from shock since I had been a hard core fan since Dookie came out. We both immediately went over and made the same request, which he seemed to enjoy, and then we wandered around with him for about five minutes while he tried to find the right bus. Just the three of us, talking the whole time. I couldn't believe it, he even gave me a whacky handshake when he finally found the right bus and went in. Mike was out a minute later. He also talked to us for a couple minutes but was more subdued. Bill Schneider was with him and enjoyed my random PHGP compliment. We repeated the request and he said he'd put in a good word. He seemed tired but was very friendly and a gentleman. During all of this, Adrienne was hanging around with the kids- I also found this cool but we didn't talk to them, just thought it would be a bit much and weird! Glad we acted like normal people and didn't bug the family! Lastly, Billie came out with his newsboy cap and sunglasses, with his tour security guy (I forget his name, but he's at all the shows) next to him. My wife ran up to him but the security guy motioned to stay back- we definitely weren't going to be able to wander around and have a long conversation with him like Tre. So, from 10 ft. away, I blurted out that LNOE was our wedding song and we'd love a dedication. He was cheerful and said "cool, I'll play it for you guys!". We were floored and thanked him- he was very friendly but that was the extent of it as his security guy basically escorted him right onto the bus. They put on an absolute monster of a show and we had great seats- right off the stage next to Mike above the floor- and we had almost forgot about the request. Then, the acoustic segment before the encore started, and instead of doing the typical acoustic medley, Billie played an incredible, heartfelt, full version of LNOE. My wife and I shed a few tears during the performance for sure. It was amazing, one of those moments that you will never forget. To this day we're both very touched by the moment, if I ever have a chance to speak with them again I'm going to thank them profusely (and probably embarrass myself while doing so, but that's ok!).1 point

So random, but I was listening to "X Kid", my favorite from the Trilogy and thought how perfect that song would have been on Revolution Radio, with that mixing, engineering, and in the thematic context of Revolution. It's just a great song and it got lost in the incoherent, underproduced jumble of the Trilogy. It would have fit perfectly on Revolution Radio. Just my opinion.1 point

So, my sister doesn't quite get why I like Green Day. So, I showed her some of their live performances on YouTube. Seriously, some of her comments gave me life... "Oh, come on, does that Billie Jean guy have to go "heeey-oh" every two minutes?" "How many times in a day can those poor schmucks go "fuckin' crayyyzeeey"?" "Oh, ok this King For A Day thing is like a weirdo ritual where they have to embarrass themselves in front of millions of people, huh?" "That drummer has more facial expressions than I have in my entire life!" "Can't quite figure out whether that Billie Jean guy is crying coz of the mascara in his eyes, or just sweating though his eyelids (which can't happen, and would be gross if it did, really)" "Does this guy have blond or brown or black hair or what?' "That bunny getup is kinda creepy, you know" "Those guys should really try out for high jump in the olympics ..." and so on...1 point

Meh I think the Oh Love video was just badly executed. It was supposed to be more like they were characters, rockstars and models hanging out together and fancying each other and being outrageous, all about feeling lust to represent the song. But it's not pulled off well at all and just looks like the band as themselves posing with models awkwardly. I think if it had been done more over the top/directed and acted better so it was obvious they were playing characters it could've worked. Wasn't offended by the idea of it, rockstars lusting after models because they're models and models lusting after rockstars because they're rockstars seems a fairly even thing. Also on the plus side Billie is hot in it1 point

To be fair that's only a little worse than a 40-year-old singing "sweet 16"1 point

Back when Uno came out, I showed one of my friends the entire album. We got to sweet 16 and she looked at me with confusion and a little concern. Going to be thinking of this guy every time I listen to that song now Appropriate as he has some excellent songs on the same subject1 point
-
Have you seen any footage of him playing St Jimmy on Broadway? He did a really good job of it, and this will be a film of the musical so I guess not too different. It's not really the same as a normal acting role as it's mostly a musical performance and it's basically just a bigger version of his own on stage persona (like when he performs St Jimmy with Green Day), so it comes to him more naturally. Can't get a much better role for him than a singing character that he created and is part himself! There's time for him to do things other than music, experiencing other things is part of life and if anything helps add to his creativity.1 point

I've never met them and had a real conversation with them. But I got to go on stage with them in June 2010, and also snatched a picture with Billie and got a few autographs when he did his run as St. Jimmy in February. He remembered me after a few nights. Amazing!1 point

Depends how you define 'meeting', haha..! I've definitely had lots of crazy moments of concert interaction, most of them with Billie But yeah, I've met Mike, as in talked to him. It was in a coffee shop the day before their latest show in Oslo; me and a friend went up to him and even though I was freaking out on the inside I somehow managed to keep cool on the outside, and we chatted for a couple of minutes, while he got his coffee and my friend bought some ice cream. Since there weren't any other people there who knew him I didn't want to make a fuss, so I didn't ask for a picture or an autograph or anything, and I definitely haven't regretted that at all. He seemed a little apprehensive at first, but relaxed when he realized we weren't gonna scream at him lol, and he was really really nice to us, even though he said he had just woken up and so this was before his morning coffee. XD We just talked about the show the following day, and how the tour had gone so far, and in the end he handed me and my friend a guitar pick each before we said goodbye and left. Aww, it's been a while since I thought about this - thanks for making me relive it! I'm really glad that my first (and so far last) time talking to them was with Mike! I really don't know if I could handle talking to Billie, and Tré just scares me, so...1 point
