I'm a longtime fan, (Dookie on cassette, 1994) and I love the Trilogy. When Green Day has released an album, post Dookie, it's usually something new, and different. (Kinda reminds me of when Warning came out, and the mainstream flipped their shit) Besides the blatant trying to capture lightning in a bottle a second time (21st copying AI) every GD album is vastly different than the last. I remember this board around the release of Uno, everyone was in love. (Yes, opinions change, and blah blah blah, but still, the hype was real.) I think there were too many people expecting the next AI (not necessarily die hard fans like on this board, but the general public), and the Trilogy could not possibly live up to that. It was Green Day, fucking around, having fun. Poor single choice, (Oh Love is one of my least favorite GD songs, and a horrible lead single), dead marketing due to iHeart (which was stupid, I thought it was pretty fucking great what he did), and too many songs to digest in a short period (kids now days have short attention spans, and can barely handle an entire record, let alone three) killed the sales. Sales don't mean shit to me though, so lets talk music. (Sorry, I stopped coming to this site shorty after Dos was released, so I haven't seen the "many" discussions on the Trilogy) For reference, I'll rank my favorite GD albums, best to least favorite. 1. Insomniac 2. Kerplunk 3. Nimrod 4. American Idiot 5. Dookie 6. Warning 7. Dos 8. 39 Smooth 9. Uno 10. 21st Century Breakdown 11. Tre Yes, the three albums rank pretty low on my list, Tre being my least favorite Green Day album, but they are still pretty damn good, Dos being my favorite of the three. The music on that album is amazing, and way underrated. It's just a fun record. Lady Cobra, Makeout Party, Wow! That's Loud, Stray Heart. The lyrics are cheesy, but that's kinda what they were going for? I'm not sure why so many people missed that point. Uno is damn good except for Oh Love. So many great pop punk tunes on that one. Tre has too many missteps for my liking. I'm not a fan of Brutal Love, 99 Revolutions, and a handful of others on that one. Uno and Dos felt tight, focused, concise, flowing throughout, each with a general theme and fill, whereas Tre felt jumbled up, more like left overs, random songs thrown together at the end. There are some great songs on that record, X-Kid, Dirty Rotten Bastards, 8th Ave., but overall, I just didn't care for it. I disagree that it was too much though. I still play all three of those records, and have a blast with them. If you think you can pick and choose a shorter track list with the best, than by all means, go make a playlist. Again, I'm old, and much prefer an album as a whole piece, and having three GD albums drop in quick succession was amazing. I'm excited for Revolution Radio though. Bang Bang is fucking amazing, and can't wait to hear the rest. tldr: The Trilogy kicks ass, suck it.6 points

I think the Trilogy succeeded in trying to be ambitious and experimental. I mean, the whole project has a distinct sound and feel unlike any other Green Day music. It's very light-hearted and glossy, which can be a bad thing, but it was a new musical direction and is unique in their discography. Seems like we've quickly forgotten all the great things the Trilogy albums brought us. Nuclear Family and Stay the Night are solid pop punk songs. Kill the DJ is a great dance/punk song that's funny and funky. Oh Love is a slow rocker with a great solo. Lazy Bones is a great song, Wild One and Wow! That's Loud have some amazing instrumental work, and Amy is a very heartful song with great vocals and fingerpicking guitar. Then we have Brutal Love which is a standout song overall for Green Day and Missing You and X-Kid which are catchy pop-punk songs. Lots of good stuff in there.5 points

The mention of cocaine as the particular drug responsible for his "memory loss" is less of an issue than the fact that they pulled together pieces of loose information to try to make a story interesting. By now most of the developed world knows Billie Joe Armstrong had a decades long drug problem and used a multitude of different types of drugs from prescription to meth and acid etc. He's already said he suffered blackouts and it was himself who said that he didn't remember most of the recording process of the trilogy and that it was "cloudy" and "fuzzy" which happens to have been right before he entered rehab for addiction. So they said cocaine rather than meth. Cocaine rather than prescription drugs. The reality is Billie himself told Rolling Stone he didn't want to say the exact drugs he was doing so obviously people (especially journalists) are going to fill in the blanks. A lot of people don't think he meant he didn't want to say what brands of prescription drugs, he meant as well as the prescription drugs and that's clearly the angle taken here. Regardless it's bad journalism. I'd be less hung up on the mention of cocaine though. Billie wasn't afraid to sing about it himself.3 points

I have a lot of respect for the way BJ talks about the trilogy. Publicly admitting its flaws is quite a brave move, I mean many people would stand their ground and said they're satisfied with it instead.3 points

He's right. You don't need to say the same thing over and over just to try and piss people off. It's really starting to get annoying and you need to stop doing it. If you know everyone in the thread already knows your opinion on something (eg American Idiot or Bang Bang) you don't need to keep saying it again.3 points

I heard Bang Bang on the local rock radio station this morning. I was so excited! I don't normally listen to the radio that often but just happened to turn it on hoping they would play it and after about 45 min. they did.2 points

yea i know and yep you're right but he would look weird if he was tre's body type. i think it just looks right but when you see his back only you might think he's a kid. he literally has no butt in these tight pants and no shoulders, all that makes him look very tiny. i totally agree but its rather the looks than the actual height like you said2 points

We tend to associate certain songs and albums with what is going on in life I think. For me the Trilogy came out while I was going through a divorce, so it will always bring back those memories for me. The divorce wasn't messy and we are still friends today, so it's not entirely a bad thing. That's just what I was going through in life. As far as bad times, American Idiot is my favorite album but my life around that time was......really screwed up. I related to American Idiot waay more than I like to admit. I know I'm not the only one but I deeply, deeply relate to Green Day's music.2 points

The post Mike made yesterday was the first one in 3 years. He doesn't usually use twitter. Maybe Billie followed him because Mike plans on becoming more active.2 points

I have NEVER so strongly agreed and disagreed with multiple things. Great post though. I don't really like ranking their albums because it has changed at different times of my life but I will say that as I got older, I started to enjoy their more melodic stuff. Don't get me wrong, i'm still a pit pusher, and I rock out when I go to shows, but just listening in the car, I'll take a nice East Jesus Nowhere over Longview. Pretty much every song on Dookie, I can't listen to anymore but FOD. Just have heard it SOOOOOO many times. I'm in the school that AI is their masterpiece but my favorite songs are all over the place. I also love TCB. I just love the lyrics, harmony and music. I think it will be considered their golden age. It's easy to forget that Billie is pushing towards 50 and he is still writing and making great music with the same band. Yes, The Rolling Stones, and bands like Waters, Mccartney and once Bowie were playing out and putting on amazing shows but they haven't made a good record in decades. Finally, I don't think there is as much difference between each album as you are purporting. It is my opinion that there is at least one song on every album that would fit on any other album. Green Day sounds like Green Day to me. Very distinct and not very variable but still the best rocking band IMO.2 points

I've been watching footage from their set at Reading festival three years ago and this is the footage that I enjoy watching the most. Their performance was awesome and I get goosebumps every time I see the fans singing the opening to BOBD. If people don't think this band are relevant anymore I suggest they watch this performance.1 point

I doubt those journalists have even done that much research. Looks like they just stuck a random rock star stereotype on him based on the Kerrang quote and hoped no one would notice. If it did come from Jesus of Suburbia I'm not sure if that's more or less ridiculous1 point

No, we got 3 albums full of mediocre or bad songs with a few good songs inbetween.1 point

I agree with your list, Not that I would personally pick it the exact way, but I would put the trilogy at the bottom of such an amazing discography. I love it too. Poor single choice yes, but I believe those songs are great and fun to hear still til this day, I just never understood why we couldn't like it but understand they have done way better. You will always find me praising these albums around the site. Very underrated but yeah we know Green Day put out way better material. Having such an extreme standard for music and taking things so seriously like I dont know. That is not me and I learn this overtime to Loosen up and just enjoy or appreciate music for what it is at times! Yeah saying that about Blink is were I draw the line I can't agree there. I like so much other stuff so there many other things for me to call aoty but I dont think I need to go there. I respect what your opinion tho!1 point

True, but I read so many negative things about them in this thread, that I had to write a love letter! They are low on my list, but my list only had Green Day albums in them, which rank higher than most other bands. My friend and I hold a yearly Music Awards Ceremony called the CAPMMAs (Cowboy and Punk's Music Music Awards) (Those are our nicknames) where we vote on on favorite songs, album, opening track, closing track, album art, etc.. Basically sometime in December, we get together, get drunk, and listen to music. We were talking about the new Blink, and how it was a contender for album of the year, that was before Bang Bang came out. Now, Blink doesn't stand a chance, lol. Point being, Green Day is some high quality shit, even the Trilogy. (That was a rough year for the CAPMMA's, having to choose between three GD albums!) And hey, I rank Uno and Dos higher than 21st! Holy shit, I just realized that was my first post. I joined in 2009, and never posted. Talk about lurking, lol!1 point

I can't claim to go that far, but it is one of my favourites along with Nimrod, 21st CB, American Idiot and Dookie. It sometimes has a turn as my favourite About the concept album discussion that was in another thread, I do think of it as somewhat of a concept album because it tells a vague story of living the party lifestyle and the consequences of it over three stages/albums. It's not a concept in the same sense as a rock opera but there is something there that makes it not just a standard set of albums. Even if the whole thing isn't I definitely think Dos is, a proper little story there with Uno really only being an intro and Tre the aftermath as far as the story aspect goes. Depends on how you define a concept album though I suppose.1 point

I think this pic of Billie is really cool and is also is the photo used for the 2010 tour shirts and posters (2nd photo)1 point

LOTAG Girls were kind of cool, I'm just really sick of seeing asses and boobs everywhere all the time... I'm not saying this is how the Bang Bang video will be, it's just that Oh Love traumatized me a bit Although, it could fit the "give me death or give me head" line, if they show these girls like, shortly and not throughout the entire video. We'll see1 point

Last Of The American Girls video would have been better without those two dancing blondes... Bang Bang video?... we'll see.1 point

Please no half naked 'sexy' dancing girls, I'm so tired of that I still hope it will be somewhat artistic and meaningful, but god... this Instagram post is taking away a chunk of hope. Dunno how a few dancing girls will fit the thematic of Bang Bang but I guess I will let it surprise me... Edit: Jesus, that website... yikes.1 point

the trilogy is perfect as it is, a triple album. I love several songs and like most of the rest, for fuck's sake even Nightlife has a really enjoyable bass line I like. I think songs like Angel Blue, Carpe Diem, Lazy Bones, Ashley, 8th Avenue Serenade are okay but for some people, they are their favourites so I would never wanted the trilogy to be shorter. Btw.. Let's be honest here, guys. GDC is full of shit sometimes, I remember I joined this site when UNO was about to get released and when all the albums leaked everyone (and I mean EVERYONE) loved the trilogy, people were even saying that TRÉ was one of their best works yet, the hype for the trilogy was fucking insane and I don't really get why suddenly everyone started to hate on it. Hypocrites.1 point
