you not liking it doesn't make it a bad song though. And plenty of good songs have 2 chords, have you heard About a Girl? I'm not saying that Fell for You is in the same caliber as that song, but 2 chords doesn't automatically make a song shit.5 points

Or, maybe because a 37 song trilogy with tiny guitars, overproduced and uninspiring vocals, mid-life crisis induced lyrics about themes that hardly even seem connected to Billie Joe Armstrong, and absolutely zero room for Tre and Mike to show their talents was, y'know, a bad idea. Exhibit A: "Where did you come from? Where have you been? Looks like you fell into the trash bin" From A Little Boy Named Train (shockingly, not nominated for record of the year) B: "Sex, drugs & violence English, math & science, Safety in numbers Give me, give me danger" From SD&V C: "Oh, anyhow, anywhere Kiss me there, oh kiss me there Oh, scream and shout, truth or dare Kiss me there, oh kiss me there" From Makeout Party D: "Where in the world’s the forgotten? They’re lost inside your memory You’re dragging on, your heart’s been broken As we all go down in history" and "Well, don’t look away from the arms of a bad dream Don’t look away, sometimes you’re better lost than to be seen Don’t look away from the arms of a moment Don’t look away from the arms of tomorrow Don’t look away from the arms of a moment Don’t look away from the arms of love" From the inimitable "The Forgotten" E: "Wanna be a Troublemaker Wanna be a Troublemaker Wanna be a Troublemaker Wanna be a Troublemaker Hey! I like your BMW I like your BM-excellent tits With a tattoo of a pig sniffing glue" From Troublemaker F: "Hanging out all by myself, at least I make good company Hey, isn't that a whatshisface that I see walking down the street I'm gonna hide in the shadows 'cause I really got nothing to say We never had anything in common and I never liked you anyway" From Loss of Control G: "Everything that I want I want from you But I just can't have you Everything that I need I need from you But I just can't have you" From Stray Heart Alright, there's what I am going to consider evidence of cliche, lazy, or subpar lyricism in the trilogy. There's many more examples, but there's a start. Now, if they had been making melodies/harmonies as tight as Kerplunk/Dookie or the instruments matched the level of Insomniac Warning or Nimrod, then maybe I'd let the lyrics go, hell I listen to music with far worse lines than this, but I've certainly come to realize Green Day are a standard above the norm, a HOF band that is worth more than the trilogy displayed5 points

I love that stuff! Deliberately doing something risque/embarrassing to challenge the audience and he gets to be funny and cheeky at the same time, fabulous . I hope he never stops. He's a little punk who thrives on poking fun at taboos and showing off, do you want him to be reserved and boring instead? He doesn't strip/moon so much now. But he'll usually think of something dirty to do, the latest thing I remember is him asking the crowd "do you wanna touch it?" lol. Just part of his style as a performer to do a bit of tongue in cheek teasing and shocking I think.3 points

I like the Trilogy. I wouldn't say it's one of their best records but there are some really cool songs on Uno, Dos and Tre. I don't understand why many people hate it. Yeah, one can disagree and dislike it, but HATE is too much.3 points

Its called the unpopular opinions thread. My unpopular opinion is - I like the trilogy.3 points

Nicely stated my friend. You have hit on exactly what bothers me. I don't care what anyone else likes, I like what I like and everyone else is entitled to like what they like. I don't have a problem discussing differences of opinion, but when someone just blatantly posts "the trilogy sucks", it gets a bit on the annoying side. Tell me why you don't like it and we can talk about it. I actually think all the "trilogy sucks" talk has made me like it more2 points

I had this whole big essay typed out but decided to forget it cause at the end of the day its not my job to make other people agree with me and i would just be a dick to even try that. What kind of music you like is up to you and thats why its special.. everyone can like what they like no matter how angry i get at the thought of people saying they didnt like American Idiot or 21st century breakdown. Uno was my least favorite there are some songs I like on there but not many. Funny thing is my favorite trilogy album is Dos which is most peoples least favorite I can listen to all the songs without a skip actually haha not sure why but the cd is fucking killer. Tre is pretty good its my second favorite of the trilogy Brutal love played and I was like holy shit this cd is gonna be fucking spectacular, most of it is really good Id say its more the direction they should have gone after 21st century if it had more distortion and less Billie backing vocals. I dont like the songs X-Kid/Amanda/99 Rev/The Forgotten. maybe a nimrod length cd would have been more appropriate im not sure but this is just my take on it. I have times where i get back into the trilogy songs but i definitely listen to everything else in the catalog way more than the trilogy.2 points

I agree with a lot of what has been said. I want Green Day to go back to doing conceptual music videos (e.g. the 21CB music video; I thought that the artistic side of it was gorgeous) as opposed to just clips of the band jamming, even though I love those too. The animated Nuclear Family music video, if I remember correctly, wasn't done by a pro hired by the band. I think it won a music video contest that GD held, or something like that. Wasn't the winning artist's name Kyle Smith? I remember reading that somewhere.2 points

I know people like to shit on Nightlife but there are still a lot of people who like Nightlife, and a lot of people like the rest of those songs you've named too Uno Dos Tré was made as a gift for the fans. It wasn't intended as an album like Dookie or AI to be universally praised. I'm sure if they wanted that, they could've just made it into a short album. They have loads of different types of fans, fans of Dookie/Insomniac, AI/21CB, Nimrod/Warning etc. and with the trilogy they tried to give something to each type of fan. I'm sure with this next release, they will make more effort to put more meaningful lyrics and a more epic sound into their songs There are loads of people who hate American Idiot. Not justr Seagull. Many people prefer the older GD albums or even the newer GD albums2 points

I don't like this argument. They could've made a tight, concise record if they removed some of the songs. If they were able to make 12-14 song albums in the past, why shouldn't they be able to do so now. If all the songs were just so mediocre that they couldn't decide on which ones were great, they shouldn't have released this material in the first place. I respect people who like the trilogy. But saying that keeping 37 songs was a good thing is wrong, because they made concise records in the past and it worked just fine. A short album like Dookie is universally praised by most fans. If there weren't 14 songs on the trilogy that they felt were strong enough to cut out the rest, as I said, they should've scrapped the project altogether.2 points

Except they didn't go back to their roots. Their roots were distorted guitars, mike-billie harmonies, wild drum fills/bass lines. They had clean guitars, billie-billie harmonizing, almost no good drum moments for Tre and even fewer bass moments for Mike.2 points

This. I do not think it was their best music ever. There is no doubt about that. I just don't understand the hate that comes everyday since 2012 about it and the "cool" crowd shat on everyone and made them feel uncomfortable for liking it. Very uncalled for a forum that should feel comfortable talking about Green Day. I mean their is shittier records out there in life that the very same people love. Every song on the trilogy still beats what Blink 182 has done since like forever, MCR, Biffy Shitro, Panic At The Disco, and so on.2 points

Can't wait for some of the haters to ruin this! Tell everyone in this thread on how much it sucks and how you still need to remind us 4 years later.2 points

It is cringeworthy, as is sticking his hands down his pants. It is about as attractive as Donald Trumps hair. I don't think he has actually done that in awhile, when he was not in a compromised state. I would actually be very disappointed if he did that kind of stuff anymore.2 points

Again the trilogy wasn't overproduced If the trilogy is overproduced then Dookienis beyond produced... People really need to learn what overproduce actually means...1 point

I love 21cb video, think it's one of their best but also like the AI era ones. Don't like Stray Heart, it's just weird and not in a good way and don't much like the animated one. What was going on with Kill the DJ, one minute they're out tearing around on motorbikes which looked good and the next walking through a nightclub?? I quite like ones filmed in the studio but we got enough of those recently, I think we need something new and innovative which they have done before.1 point

I've just watched the video for 21st Century Breakdown and it fits the song perfectly. The animated video for Nuclear Family isn't anywhere near as good as the 21st Century Breakdown video.1 point

"No one can agree on the 15 best songs" is a terrible argument. American Idiot has 13 songs and everyone except Seagull loves it. Would you rather have them release 37 songs on American Idiot and let the fans make a playlist with their 13 favorite songs?1 point

Only having 15-18 songs instead of the 37 would not make it better. If you read "In Defense of the Trilogy" discussion, that explains why perfectly. People have different opinions on which songs are better than others. Nobody can agree on the top 15 songs of the trilogy. Because people have differing opinions. If you don't like a lot of the songs from the trilogy, you can just make a playlist of all your favourite songs. If GD only made 15 songs there's a good chance that many of the songs that you like wouldn't have been released. With the trilogy, some songs appeal to different fans e.g some songs are more like the classic Green Day, some are like Foxboro Hot Tubs, some are like AI/21CB. With 37 songs there's almost guaranteed that there will at least be something that everyone will like. I'm actually glad they made it a trilogy.1 point

Or it could be a highlight of the night. I can just picture it. Billie Joe: Yeeeeaaaaahhh! Yeeeeeaahhh! Yeeeahhh!! COME ON!!!! Crowd: Yeeeeaaaahhh!! Yeeeaaaahhh! Yeeeeeeaaaahh!!! Billie Joe: SAY HEY OHHHHH!!!! Crowd: HEY OHHHHH!!!! Billie Joe: (Insert City) PUT YOUR HANDS IN THE AIR!!!! Calling all demons this is the season...... Anybody who played the Green Day version of Angry Birds would know it1 point

It seems like most people believe that if Green Day had made one album that contained the best songs from Uno, Dos, and Tre, then the album wouldn't have been bad at all. Also, the lyrics were sort of weak and the production of the songs were too much. Honestly, I liked the trilogy and I still listen to the albums all the way through from time to time. It was played during the small shows they did before the album release, but not afterwards.1 point

Along with the other replies, I think that DRB may be tried out as a song on the next tour, along with other trilogy songs. I only say this because along with the typical hits and songs from the new albums, they always seem to sprinkle in a few older or lesser known songs. I think it is possible that songs like DRB and Troublemaker and Missing You could definitely be played more. (I know Missing You was performed quite a few times but that didn't happen until halfway into the tour)1 point

I agree I like some of the older ones the best, that capture the humor of the group. I watch a lot of music videos because of my job. I look up videos of songs for high schoolers to learn on the piano. Basically they write their requests down, and I research them for appropriateness, and arrange the best ones for the class. Well a lot of videos are so serious now, and kind of boring. I still laugh at the "Walking Contradiction" and "Holiday" and "Warning" videos. I hope they do something funny. I know it's just opinion but Oh Love and Kill the DJ seemed so flat to me. I really like both of those songs. Both of those songs have nuances that didn't come through in the videos.1 point

I thought I was reading the fangirls thread with all the arguing over who's the biggest fan. Guess I'm the only one annoyed with the same conversation over and over again. Yes, I get it's all playful but I still find it overkill.1 point
