  1. This isn't a 'wtf' email, but still something sent to GDA. It's adorable!

  3. I couldn't agree more. I know my favorites, but how could I rank them? I can't put my least favorite near the bottom of any list whatsoever. I'm not going to rank here, but just run through the redeeming qualities of each: - 1039- precocious songwriting, great preview of talented 17 year olds coming together as a band. Terrible recording quality but awesome songs. - Kerplunk- again, bad recording setup (indie album, so of course this will be the case) but good lord the songwriting and talent levels are clearly off the charts. The new drummer is damn good too. - Dookie- no explanation needed. What a slap in the face to wake grunge out of its trance like hold on the radio and what was once known as MTV. - Insomniac- turbo charged buzzsaw that reaffirmed Dookie and showed that these now ripe old 24 year olds not only had the songwriting chops but the attitude and longevity to permanently change the music scene. -Nimrod- transcendental album, creativity, experimentation, and songwriting expertise galore. What. An. Album. -Warning- yeah, they can do classic rock, and mix it with a sh*tload of punk DNA. And it will sound great. Castaway and Deadbeat Holiday- drop the mic. For those still doubting, listen to Waiting. Minority ended up being a concert staple. I could list another half dozen winners from this album. -AI- nothing needed to say here. Masterpiece. -21CB- just a pure triumph. While anyone can criticize certain segments as failing to be as strong as the body of work, overall this was their opus, in my opinion. As Rob Cavalho so well put it, they were clearly "shooting for the stars" on this one. -Trilogy- again, much like 21CB, sometimes there was clearly genius on display (X Kid, Rusty James, Stray Heart, 99, Stay the Night), sometimes it lagged, but the only flaw was they shared a little B side material with their true fans on the album instead of releasing cutting room floor material much later. Such a transparent attempt of sharing the creative and songwriting process through the album not only with the breadth of material but also with the subsequent release of Quatro. I know my favorites, but I can't criticize the others, either. It's been an insanely impressive body of work.

  5. Interesting. I thought Scumbag and Outsider were recorded during the Nimrod sessions as I remember listening to them nonstop prior to Warning. The sound also seems distinctly Nimrod to me. Were they released as Warning B Sides or is my memory just blending eras at this point? I am sure I could easily Google the facts but I will take your word as you would know better than I. I like your call of Desensitized, Suffocate, etc. as being some of their best material. They were incredibly prolific and creative during this era. I have been listening to a playlist of my top GD songs lately and Scattered, All the Time, Uptight, Jinx, Haushinka, etc. are on heavy rotation. When you listen to these songs you realize how incredibly proficient they were musically (harmonies during Scattered, bass lines during Jinx) during this period. The lyrics (i.e. the Grouch) were superb. And while it felt like they had been on the scene forever, I think they were 27 at the time, maybe 26 or even 25 when recording and even younger when writing. I know we as hardcore fans recognize it, but for such a huge band, I feel they are terribly underrated at times. The Nimrod era was still early in their career arc, but the music still continues to amaze me every day. I can say the same about each one of their albums, but Nimrod flew under the radar at the time, and is arguably their strongest work to date. Other albums were more polished (AI, 21CB), or immediate (Insomniac, while a bit of a Dookie hangover, still immediately punched you in the jaw with its grit and angst, and Dookie was a splash of cold water during the at-times sleepwalk that was grunge). There is so much to love about the band. I can't wait to hear what they're currently working on.

  10. Yeah Suffocate, Desensitized, You Lied, Sick of Me, Rotting and Espionage are all originally Nimrod, the best stuff. Scumbag with its excellent lyrics by Mike and the Outsider cover are Warning, not bad either.

  11. Yeah I think they're just grasping for any reason to do a Green Day spread . But that's a good thing, I'd rather see a magazine desperately want to feature them than not.
