  1. just taking his ridiculous premise and turning it, I'm being very sarcastic. If AI/21CB are trying too hard in any way, then with that lens the trilogy was trying too hard in a number of different ways. My point is that he just chooses to apply one set of logic to the albums he does like, and a completely different set to the ones he doesn't.

  2. I draw those parallels too! But I pair some of them up differently. I think of it as 21st Century Breakdown and Jesus of Suburbia Know Your Enemy and American Idiot Viva La Gloria and She's a Rebel Before the Lobotomy/Restless Heart Syndrome and Give Me Novacaine Christian's Inferno/Horseshoes and Handgrenades and St Jimmy East Jesus Nowhere and Holiday Last of the American Girls and Extraordinary Girl 21 Guns and Boulevard of Broken Dreams (and now you mention it WMUWSE fits too) American Eulogy and Homecoming and I didn't think of Static Age and Letterbomb before but I will now. I don't find there to be much of a story to 21st CB but the Christian and Gloria characters and those songs certainly have their similarities to the JoS and Whatsername characters/AI songs.

  5. If anything, 21Guns is more similar WMUWSE than anything else. You can pretty much draw parallels between the two albums based on the tracks alone Murder CIty and Are We the Waiting Christian's Inferno and St. Jimmy Viva La Gloria and Holiday Before the Lobotomy and Give me Novacaine Static Age and Letterbomb etc. Does that make any sense? I kind of base it on how alike the story plots are.

  6. Even the party songs though. I just imagine a man who's going to all these crazy events to escape reality and instead it's like a bad trip.

  7. Nimrod will always be my favorite. Shenanigans (IT COUNTS ) and 1039/sosh teeter-totters with Insomniac though. Oh, and AI because Are We the Waiting is arguably my favorite song. In any case, my unpopular opinion is that Dos and Tre are quite possibly the most emotionally disturbing albums I've ever listened to. And I listen to songs about people getting mutilated. I dont know man, I was just thinking about it in the car yesterday. Like....getting old, becoming that age where you really aren't relevant to the rest of the world, seeing your friends and family get sick and/or die...throw in a dash of alcoholism and a constant fear of fucking up the present by trying to hold onto the past. It's dark stuff to me. Way darker than a song like Meat Hook Sodomy *uneasy*

  8. I'm sorry, but you can't just use "it's intentionally silly" as an excuse any time trilogy lyrics suck. Actually, I'm not sorry. I think the only time that argument even applies/works is for All By Myself or Fuck Time or songs that are just completely over the top. Songs like Troublemaker and Wild One are so obviously trying to be ~edgy and failing. Bad. No amount of excuses can shield that objective badness.
