Green Day’s Mike Dirnt: Making Something From Nothing
Green Day is soon to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, an awesome feat for the perennial punk adolescents from the Bay Area, who got their start on the punk scene at Berkeley’s legendary 924 Gilman club.
While the band’s mass appeal has them playing to sold-out arenas, bassist Mike Dirnt has still found time over the years to play dive-bar gigs in his beloved side punk project, the Frustrators.
Fender.com recently caught up with Dirnt to talk about his love for punk as part of our month-long tribute to the genre.
“For me punk rock music started with being 13 and skateboarding,” he said. “Most of the bands I liked were my friends’ bands. They were making music and trading demo tapes out of lunch boxes.
“I found great music was being created by people a lot like me. I can always relate to D.I.Y. culture — making something from nothing is what I love about music and individual expression.
“As a kid, I identified with the lyrics of the punk bands I was listening to, and those lyrics were probably the biggest contributor to many of the ethos I hold today.”
