It's just so damn catchy. It's a bloody crime against humanity that it wasn't a single.2 points

Castaway? Interesting choice, why? Misery is brilliant.2 points

On the last leg of the 21st CB tour in South America he went on one of his anti (certain aspects of) technology rants during a show. He was particularly wound up on this occasion and in the heat of it he said "I hope Steve Jobs dies of fucking cancer!". It was obviously really meant as an extreme way of saying "fuck technology" rather than a personal attack on Steve Jobs, but pretty harsh. Oh no I do think he was different in that it was more extreme and a lot of his antics were definitely largely down to drink/drugs. I just don't think all his antics were that different or that they were all only as a result of drink/drugs. Yeah Billie said that morning they'd told him they wanted him to cancel and go to rehab but he didn't want to so he went ahead with the show. I guess it must've been in that Rolling Stone interview since it's the only one he's done about it, have to check. That was the reason they were late on stage and Tre came out to play All By Myself to get the show started. Kind of crazy to know that when we were queuing all day and wondering what the hold up was all that was going on now, having been oblivious at the time.2 points

Goddammit, I like to pretend the Steve Jobs rant doesn't exist... why did you have to remind me?! Maybe I just wasn't as informed as I thought I was about his modern-day antics. To me, the stuff you described is just as cringe-worthy as iHeart Radio. I wouldn't laugh at him drunkenly trying to kick a fan in the face or spit on them. I think it's just as pathetic. That's why I think, again, the high visibility of the iHeart Radio event is what makes it so notably terrible. This wasn't a Green Day concert, it was a widely broadcasted public spectacle and (to my knowledge) at similar events in the past, the shit he pulled certainly wouldn't fly. That isn't meant to diminish the things he did at Green Day shows — again, just trying to explain why iHeart Radio is so particularly cringe-worthy to me and to others. And honestly, Foxboro Shows don't even count for me because "drunken shit show" is pretty much the premise...2 points

Shepherd's Bush was late to start (Tre started the concert) then billie made it on stage - they said it was technical issues (we probs will never know). As for his other antics - they are the reason I didn't take my son in 2009 as I thought he was too young to witness what billie may throw out to the crowd. I made him wait until last year when he was old enough - but he got a clean sober and happy billie on stage1 point

I totally agree with what you said JJ. Another thing I think of with some of his behavior is what if family members were at the shows and saw him doing that? What would they think? I remember reading somewhere that Billie's mom and sister were watching the IHeart show. If I was them I would feel so embarressed and disappointed in him. I would die if that was my kid up there acting like that.1 point

On the note of being drunk and embarrassing himself, how do people feel or perceive what he used to do during Hitching A Ride, where he masterbated or pretended to on stage? Was that drunken behavior or just Billie being Billie? I've seen videos of it and honestly I felt embarressed for him. Maybe I just feel that way, I dont know.1 point

I'll just rep you for missing the reference1 point

I was quoting NimJim I mean yeah I agree, I wouldn't want to split it up, but I'd never be willing to put I Don't Care above Restless Heart Syndrome for any reason.1 point

I'm sorry but it contains the word 'retarded' and that is seriously one of the worst words you can say.1 point

I'm sorry, Dearly Beloved is clearly the best thing they've ever done.1 point

oh my god we have the same top 2 Good Riddance is my third, I'd say. This has actually inspired me to re-order/update my GD favorites playlist1 point

Yes, but sayng it is not in your Top 50 has you ranking it where I would rank Platypus. Plus, it the lyrics are powerful and engaging, the melodies set the tone for the entire album. Plus, I could listen to Dearly Beloved on constant rotation. But Homecoming is better live.1 point

Well, I suppose they do call this place Unpopular Opinions...1 point

Whoa, not sure what to say about that. That has floored me more than Cigarettes and Valentines was not a real song.1 point

Soundtrack to my never ending youth and my record of the day! Thx@billiejoearmstrong and @greendayig #39 #cleanshave #smoothlikeken From Matt Skiba1 point

Yeah, that is an unusual top 3. Mine would definitely be JoS, Homecoming and Basket Case, though Castaway is definitely in the top 10. That's true, it is one of the most generally fun songs I've ever heard. I would so love to be in a moshpit for it.1 point

This encore 2 is fucking awesome!! But the rest... I even like Minority ... But not in the setlist of a show !! Never!1 point

I love Misery!! But i love Castaway too... But Misery is better! Impossible to make a top 31 point

To be fair the embarrassment of iHeart could have been avoided if whoever was doing the sound had done their damn job. It was immediately obvious he was losing his shit, all they had to do was cut his mic and the entire rant could have been avoided. Whichever way you slice it someone must have known they could have put a stop to it but instead they went ahead and allowed it to become a spectacle.1 point

Yeah I'm with you there, the fact it was so public did make it different and a lot more significant (even if not all his antics were that different). But even on the last couple of pages of this thread people are saying they're disturbed by Irving Plaza because we now know he had problems at the time, but there's no concern about the video of him drunkenly drop kicking a crowd member even though he's said on numerous occasions that he had problems with alcohol and was a mess then. I don't really think there needs to be for either, we have no idea how much of what he did onstage was because of that and how much was just his personality at either so I don't see the need to try and attribute everything to drink/drugs/personal problems, especially when his behaviour wasn't particularly out of the ordinary and only appears so with hindsight.1 point

I don't know why, but this has seriously blown my mind! I don't know why I never realized this before. Although it's quite comical to think that their album with two 9-minute songs is their most concise... However, Warning immediately came to mind as an album that doesn't drag on for me, weirdly enough. It's by no means my favorite. I don't even know if I like it all that much. But when I'm in a mood to listen to it, everything flows nicely (with the exception of Misery, but we won't get into that right now). Dookie isn't bad, but the end of the album starts to blur and Coming Clean, Emenius Sleepus and In The End could be cut without me caring all that much. Even Insomniac, although it's tight as hell, could do without Tight Wadd Hill, oddly enough. So yeah, I guess, aside from AI, every album has at least one I'd cut from it. AI really is the untouchable masterpiece.1 point

The thing is, though, many of those don't mean anything. How many shows has Billie been off key on before and after that? Loads. And this is by no means the first time he's forgotten lyrics to songs or changed around words to mock Mike. Just revisited some of the footage in the last few minutes and scrolled through to watch closeups of Tre and he looked just fine to me. And as I said, the park thing is obviously unfortunate but that's not part of the show itself.1 point

The aftermath is cringeworthy, yeah, but I feel like people read way too much into the concert itself. Before the meltdown everyone was going on about how it was the best Green Day concert ever and so on and so forth; it was only after iHeart that all this talking about "I knew something was wrong" started. The breakdown is rather personal, yeah, but I guess I just don't see the rest of it. Granted, I haven't watched the proshot portion in ages.1 point

What exactly happens at Irving Plaza that's so sad to watch? As far as I can tell Billie got toasted and they played an awesome setlist.1 point

I'm far too close to going to bed rn to tell you why your opinion stinks Another day1 point

Tre from the trilogy is listed as an honorable mention for a bad album from a good band. I think it's weird that they singled Tre out from the rest of the trilogy and how they chose to play The Forgotten, but thats just my opinion.1 point

This debate about using the N-word in American Eulogy reminds me of a story I wrote about a girl whose family sued a local school district for racial discrimination. Allegedly, students hurled the N-word on a daily basis while school officials sat by and did nothing. One administrator apparently even admitted she uses the word frequently herself. As I was preparing to write the story, I asked my editor if I should use the word "nigger," or write "N-word," or put "n-----," or some other censored form. He told me censoring the word diminishes the wrong these people did. He suggested I print the full word "nigger" when describing the allegations against the school officials, and I did. In printing "nigger," sure, I probably offended some people. But I wasn't printing it as my own words. I was printing it as the racist school official's words. The point is to make people feel uncomfortable by using the word in your quotation or paraphrase — to show how wrong it is when used this way. I think the same argument can (and should) be used for American Eulogy. Green Day obviously isn't saying it in the manner rappers or racist white people do. The band included it in lyrics as a quotation, while quoting a mentality the song is clearly against. The point is to make you uncomfortable by using the quote. Fuck, the phrase is even put in quotation marks in the lyrics, which rarely happens: Fight fire with a riot The class war is hanging on a wire Because the martyr is a compulsive liar, when he said "It's just a bunch of niggers throwing gas into the ..." So, yeah, my conclusion: The point of the lyric is to make you uncomfortable, but not with Green Day. You're supposed to be mad at the "martyr/compulsive liar."1 point

I'm not sure if this is an unpopular opinion at all, but I think Panic Song was one of the best off Insomniac. And I love Insomniac to death, so picking it out as a favorite should definitely mean it's worth something.1 point
