  1. The concept of Insomniac and Warning being dull and dreary just really hurts my brain. Warning is one o my favorites. It still maintains the energy level of their previous records but shows a growth towards more mature concepts.

  3. I'll lynch you on the behalf of all the sensible folks of GDC since not liking Longview is an unforgivable, venomous, atrocious, pugnacious, froward and all-around blasphemous crime, and your soul deserves to be eternally accursed vexatiously.

  4. Alright, seriously now. If someone has a different opinion, there's no need to crush it, and can disagree like civilised people without any bad blood. People may dislike or like Dos, for example, but there's nothing wrong with either of them. Basically, disagreeing with someone is not vile or unkind, as it's as valid an opinion as yours. Obviously, though, there's no need to act like one's own personal opinion is the right one, as art is always subjective. So yeah, people may disagree with you, and it's natural, but the bad blood is hardly necessary. That applies to all of us.

  5. I'd consider myself a Trilogy fan if Dos was excluded. In my mind's eye Dos has switched places with Stop, Drop and Roll as both are stylistically similar. I perceive SDR as a proper GD album and Dos as a side project album and I'm happy

  6. The concept of someone saying that, plus saying the trilogy is better than those two albums is enough to give me a heart attack. To each their own, I suppose.

  7. I genuinely don't see how Insomniac can be put in the same sentence with "dull" or "dreary". There's not a single track on that I don't love. Warning is fantastic too, but enough people don't like it for me to not be completely astounded by it.

  8. I think Paper Lanterns was the song he "hey-ohhed" in the most, found an example at 5:20 here (or start watching at 4:25 if you want to see some entertaining kinkiness first ): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5dQPN460M0

  9. Pretty sure the box set was about £20 when it first came out (mine is in the car atm so I can't check) The CD's are only in card sleeves and there are no lyric booklets so I doubt you would get much if you sold them individually.

  10. They use the same concept in one of my favorites, Whatsername. The song is sung in a monotone to show the frustration and despair the character feels.

  11. That's the point - it's a song about the narrator's mind falling apart into dull delerium, just like Longview.

  12. Warning is the best album they ever made. Especially lyrically.

  15. Is it bad that I hope that all of the crap the band has had in the last two years will lead to some good songs?

  16. Todd's original disagreeing post wasn't rude, it's pretty obvious he doesn't really mean it's seriously not okay to like some songs on an album and that he was saying so lightheartedly. As long as people aren't being nasty to each other/making things personal it's fine to disagree about music. The conversations's got a bit off track so it'd probably be best to get back to Green Day questions now. He was doing it on the Dookie tour, pretty much as soon as they were playing in big arenas I think. I'll find a video of it when I get the chance. I love seeing early videos of him doing that , he did it in such a sarcastic but also silly and playful way back then. Nice way of poking fun at the idea of being rockstars playing in a big venue but also just genuinely having fun and involving the crowd.

  18. I hope that he has something to say about it, when he writes about such raw powerful things like addiction he hits the nail on the head. See: Hitchin A Ride

  19. We can always use some more Mike songs. Having a Dirnt-penned song on an album was nice way to change things up a bit.

  20. I swear I'm the only one who thinks Dos is the best in the trilogy. I just love songs like "Stray Heart" and "Makeout Party". Those two songs have some of Mike Dirnt's best bass work IMO.

  21. It used to be $50 when it came out, Best Buy had it for $40, and now it's down to $25. Amazing how that happened. And it's the perfect set because it doesn't include the trilogy! (To be better, It should have came with Stop Drop and Roll, however some copies of the album fit into the box, so if you do have it, you can slip it in there )

  22. I agree that he was, but at least after that he did go to rehab. Some rockstars may have refused and ended up killing themselves.

  23. I love Billie to death, but he didn't realize he was in a bad place until after he took handfuls of Xanax, handfuls of sleeping pills and drank his limited body weight in alcohol before going on stage for a nationally televised benefit concert. He was forced to realize. He was a walking disaster during the trilogy days.

  25. Saying "At least it wasn't as bad as this other stuff!" is the epitome of damning with faint praise. And if you take a look at Dos it is indeed all about "money drugs and hoes".

  27. The first two sentences: completely agree. The last part: heresy.

  28. I don't really get why people think Billie's going through rehab will have some magical effect on his songwriting, it's hardly the first big thing he's gone through in his life and Green Day's most acclaimed albums weren't written while he was going through anything bigger than their least acclaimed. There doesn't seem to be much correlation between how much stuff Billie's dealing with (or what substances he is or isn't using) and how good his writing is as far as I can see. I'll be interested to see how he writes about/takes inspiration from his rehab experiences but I don't have much reason to think the writing drawn from that will be any better the writing from anything else he's drawn inspiration from.

  30. It's different to write about drugs than to write drugged

  31. You misunderstand, we're talking about his writing about addictions well.

  32. I actually feel relatively confident about whatever Billie writes next. I do love Mike's songs, but Billie's experience with rehab and related things might have provided some inspiration. The main problem with the Trilogy was that the lyrics weren't up to scratch and it didn't really sound like Billie had anything to say. Hopefully that might have changed in the last couple of years.

  33. Plus he's got a lifetime worth of experiences that haven't been turned in to lyrics. I think Billie is on another planet as far as ability as a lyricist goes but even I can admit he must be running low on things to write about (one would assume). Mike hasn't written 1000+ pieces like Billie, so I think that helps.

  34. The GD Collection version of Maria is the original version from the Waiting 7". The International Superhits version is a re-recording. Remastering would not cause a noticeable difference. They are two different recordings

  38. I enjoy the songs from 'Dos'. I'm not happy with the sound, and I surely don't take as serious as 'American Idiot' - or even Dookie - but it's a good album and I still don't fully understand the hate for it (yep, I can even enjoy "Nightlife" and "Wow! That's Loud"). I guess it's easier hating something than liking it - especially at GDC haha

  39. I saw The Who last night and they mentioned Green Day. Said something like 'You might have heard Green Day play this song. If you didn't hear Green Day play it you may have heard Jack White attempt it' then they played A Quick One While He's Away. Really pleased they played it as now I've seen Green Day and The Who p[lay it live

  41. I think the song reflects the drunken thoughts of a horny person They don't have to make much sense - from the perspective of an inebriated deviant, the song captures that exact moment of "fuck it, I'm hammered. let's get nasty". I'm pretty sure most of us can relate to the kind of hazy infatuation that Makeout Party is recreating.
