Please tell me I'm not the only one who doesn't buy this "the trilogy has a planned theme/story" bull shit. The trilogy certainly is not a concept album by any means, and I think a half-assed comment from Billie (go figure) has been misconstrued to mean a lot more than he intended. If anything,I'd argue that grouping the songs together by theme was an afterthought after they decided they had "too many" songs, as the documentary suggests. But I really don't think the songwriting indicates any sort of real story or plot line. The only evidence I can even think of is the mentioning of the "red lights" on each album, and that's just poorly done anyway (not to mention, the phrase doesn't even make much sense).10 points

On the subject of the whole "red lights" thing, I think it should be mentioned that he first used the line "stop when the red lights flash" in his cover of That's Alright that was on the iTunes 21CB, so it's definitely not something he made up for the Trilogy.3 points

That's what I'm saying. If anything, I feel like the situation is similar to a literature analysis where the teacher asks you to identify all the metaphors, etc. in a piece of writing, and essentially a reader (or in this case, a listener) can interpret something to mean whatever they want. It becomes a situation of, "did the writer intend for this to be there, or are we just reading what we want to read?" I don't think this is much different. Like I said, I think after the fact, once the songs were written, Billie realized there were a few themes that they could use to organize songs, but I hardly believe it influenced songwriting, in the sense that songs were written to "tell a story." And as someone else said, a lot of the themes — regret, love, meltdown, partying, etc. — aren't necessarily unique or new when it comes to Green Day. TL;DR I think Billie is full of shit when he says most things, including that the trilogy tells a story.3 points

The only concept album out of the Trilogy is DOS, as it clearly has a concept: It's inherently shite3 points

That could be the case but why would that be a bad thing? Organizing an album is part of the creative process and I'm not sure why it matters if a story is formed during that part of it or during the actual songwriting. Especially since I don't believe Billie has ever said it was part of the songwriting, or even said that it's a story. Him saying "Uno is like getting ready for the party, Dos is like the party and Tre is like the consequences/reflection afterwards" or whatever doesn't mean it literally tells that story in the lyrics, it's just a way of loosely describing the three albums.2 points

How does the mention of red lights make no sense? They represent stopping and going and sex/danger, a lot of the songs are about deciding whether to "stop or go", whether to give into the temptation of sex/drugs/partying and other potentially dangerous things. Can't really see what there is to criticize there, just as there's nothing to criticize about the references to fire in 21st CB for example. Just part of the theme of the album. Pretty sure Billie hasn't described Uno Dos and Tre as concept albums either, just said there's a loose theme. Which there is.2 points

Band of broken dreams For a brief period, I was Watertown Middle School’s biggest Green Day fan. But 2004’s American Idiot came out while I was in seventh grade, and I couldn’t get into it. Its mock-political premise was different from the snotty pop-punk Green Day, the band I initially fell in love with. The inherent schmaltz of ubiquitous radio smash “Boulevard Of Broken Dreams” didn’t sit well with my budding music identity. I soon came to a tough realization: I could no longer relate to my favorite band. Something about my rejection of American Idiot inspired me to reassess my fandom, and I suddenly could no longer find the things I once enjoyed in their older material, too. I didn’t give it much thought then, but I had clearly outgrown a band, perhaps for the first time. Many years, and a few jarring shifts in taste later, I’m finally starting to wonder: do certain artists have a creative expiration date? The versions with inside out covers have been popping up around europe and asia. We don't really know why the cover is like that, but it's still pretty cool.1 point

Don't kill me, but I just can't like boulevard of broken dreams as hard as I try. I mean it's certainly not bad, but it just does not stand out for me compared to their other song, and the lyrics do not really touch me as well. Here in the Netherlands we have a top 2000 (of all time songs) every year and everyone can vote, and boulevard of broken dreams is always in the list, but .. no it just does not feel special to me1 point

Found this version of the shenanigans CD in a local supermarket. Is it a newer version or a localized Dutch version? Does anybody know? Had to pick it up since it was only 2 bucks.1 point
