  1. DISCOGRAPHY REVIEW: Green Day GREEN Day are celebrating a number of high-profile anniversaries in 2014. All the way back in February 1994, 3rd album Dookie turned them from a large act on a minor label to beginning a punk-rock takeover of the Billboard charts and inspiring a number of other consequent acts. Further down the line, September 2004 saw the band release American Idiot, which came out when the band had lost some of their star power and the LP duly made them stadium rock stars the world over – not least here in Milton Keynes, where the band played two sell out nights at the Bowl in 2005. These high profile anniversaries are marking the band’s two best known records. But are these the band’s best albums, and what else should the band be remembered for? http://citiblogmk.co.uk/2014/03/29/discography-review-green-day/

  4. Yeah Rest has a proper emotional/poignant atmosphere to it (despite any cheesiness), I suppose you only really get the effect of that when listening to it rather than just thinking of the song. I'd say the same for No One Knows as well. Yay for reinforcements arriving

  5. When I was like 17 or 18 me and my friends used to get really stoned and listen to 39/Smooth a lot because it is an album made by 17 or 18 year olds getting really stoned a lot. Rest was always the song that everybody was really quiet during because it was so slow and trippy. I dont know how Id feel about the song if I didn't always attach it to those memories. It does kind of have a weird hair metal ballad vibe going on, but it also sounds like something hippies would listen to. Totally out of place with the rest of the record.

  7. Yup. It's also got the best version of The Grouch ever, and "David's Song" which was done on the fly, and is one of the funniest things I've ever heard. Amazing show all round.

  8. Whenever i listen to the older albums, I always get a happy feeling inside of my chest. This usually tends to make me want to rock out to the songs. But i've always liked Insomniac more than the rest of the albums only because of its dark punk sound I've always liked American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown the most, besides all of the other albums. To be honest, it has not really a heavy punk sound but a punk sound that just catches my attention more and makes me say, "Now this is a really good song". I also relate to the songs more off of AI and 21st CB than i really do from the older albums or the Trilogy. American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown reminds me that i'm not alone and i can get through anything if i just take a chance to. That's all i've got to say about that

  9. This is clearly the best version of Knowledge ever. The brass arrangement, groove, Billie's vocals, audience response, everything... all just perfect.

  14. I REALLY REALLY like Oh Love and Know Your Enemy.. Oh Love is plain catchy (and the solo is pretty great ) And Know Your Enemy is a really good song to get pumped up to and feel bad-ass

  15. I thought Billie was just being Billie and was shouting gibberish, maybe something about food (I'm pretty sure I heard a 'jello' there). Speaking of Rusty James: 'foggy knives and rusty chains.' EDIT: I just remembered. G-L-O-R-I-A "The jello hard I ate." Billie's attempt at Yoda-speak, ladies and gentlemen.

  16. Well it's faster, that's the main difference, right? But not too fast, as I always thought the Operation Ivy version was. There's more of a groove to it.

  17. I always thought he was shouting something in Arabic; I think because earlier in the album "Peacemaker" has a distinctly Middle Eastern vibe, and because the "G-L" sounds vaguely like "jihad".

  18. I like the trilogy, almost all the songs are just amazing to me and just like a few are just decent... Crucify me.

  21. I haven't listened to that song since I first listened to 39/Smooth. Just put it on now and Jesus fuck that's awful. You're right, it sounds like someone took the actual recording and slowed it down in Audacity or some such shit.

  25. All subjective my friend True (and that's part of its charm, I like all their early work too). I think there's something extra cheesy about Rest though, you can tell they'd heard some dodgy hair metal power ballads before composing it Wrong

  26. I love Uno Dos and Tre and I think they're excellent albums, I listen to each of them in full at least once a week and listen to something from them pretty much every day, and I don't see anything that makes them "objectively" worse than Green Day's other albums #actual unpopular opinion in this thread It's very sappy/cheesy to be fair ("Angeeel, ANGEEEEL, dancing away!" for example). But in the context that it's some plucky teenagers playing it with all their hearts it's sweet, and the music is good quality, so I still enjoy it. And it was written in the 80's when there were far more shockingly cringeworthy rock songs around (power ballads etc) so got to cut it some slack

  31. And as for the simple music discussion. I've said it before and I'll say it again: The music is only the same if you are reading off of a sheet of paper. If you are listening to the songs, they have been developing and expanding on their sound from 39/Smooth to 21CB, the only relapse was seen on the trilogy.

  32. I see that many have formed their own 'favourite' playlist from the trilogy, songs they liked the most. I see this as the achievement for Green Day. All these lists are so unique. There was this giant pool of songs available to everyone so there was something or the other for every type of listener.

  35. Right Ankle. Kerplunk is my favourite album and I consider myself an X Kid. The artist said the hyphen would just blur so he didn't include it. Left front hip, complete with Soundwave barrier bruises St Jimmy heart (for Billie) and a slightly edited Tré anchor. This is incomplete, it still needs symbols for Mike and Jase. Left forearm - this one is only 3 weeks old. I got it in Australia after Melbourne Soundwave. Marking 5 shows in 9 months.

  36. Sort of random, but also very neat: Tonight I had the privilege to meet Marky Ramone, drummer of the Ramones, who spoke at my school tonight. After the show, I met him privately and he signed my belt and took pictures. During his presentation, though, he spoke a bit about Green Day. These are the random remarks he made: - All three of them are extremely nice guys, and he has hungout with them on many occasions - When the Ramones were inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame, they didn't want to perform due to the recent death of Joey Ramone. Green Day volunteered to play Ramones songs, and apparently they rehearsed a lot and took it very seriously. Marky says that what Green Day did for his band was special and something he will never forget. - When asked about new music he listens to, he mentioned Foreverly, saying that it brings him great joy when artists test themselves and try new things. - He also said that Dookie is an excellent album, and that overall Green Day are very talented musicians.

  41. It seems to me Green Day has a difficult time taking long breaks without doing something creative. Perhaps they'll do other projects like the Foxboro Hot tubs in between.
