Essentially all of post-Dookie to pre-A.I. is criminally underrepresented in concert. Those 3.5 albums have by far, the best deep cuts5 points

Murder City is massively underrated, to be fair. Dropping the title track and The Static Age is just bizarre to me.4 points

I think saying Green Day is being relegated in to "The Billie Joe Show" is an irrelevant argument because it was created out of a lot of assumptions that Mike and Tre are being squeezed out of the creative process. We know nothing of Green Day's creative process. We shouldn't pretend to. Billie could be the biggest ass in world but unless we know him personally I think it's unfair to assume he's pretentious, especially based on what we have to go on. But I agree that he may not be the type of person I'm friends with, doesn't mean he is a bad person.4 points

They did. Billie would tell stories during the intro, it was a fun live song. I still say cutting American Eulogy was a mistake.3 points

I know They've still only done it live 9 times since 2002, though. And never when I've seen them. Those bitches.3 points

It's funny how every single discussion we have in this thread somehow cycles back to the Trilogy. It's like a dark vortex from which nothing escapes. Fair enough, though I haven't changed my views on the Trilogy's lyrics sucking.3 points

Ok when you say big and serious I assume you refer to the two behemoth concept albums (AI and 21cb). Well here's how I see Green Day's progression: 39/Smooth: Simple 3 chord pop punk songs, teenage themes, some great bass, shit tons of harmonies, negative production. Kerplunk: Simple 3 chord pop punk songs, teenage themes, tons of great bass, and lots of harmonies, with limited production. Dookie: Same as Kerplunk except with a huge step up in production. Insomniac: Simple punk songs, with themes reflecting their disillusion with the response to Dookie, tons of great bass, solid amount of harmonies. Nimrod: Same melodic undertones but with experimental twists, adult themes. Warning: Increasing use of acoustic guitar and more experimentation, but with more political themes. AI: move away from pop punk and toward stadium rock, introduction of concept to album tied with political themes. 21CB: Increase focus on vocals and piano, large production and a lot of political themes Uno:................ Less instrument production but same amount of vocal production, themes: ??, bass: ??, Dos: Wtf Coked out party theme, with some experimentation in to 60's, but with a contradicting clean guitar tone. Tre: Twilight. Mostly simple pop punk songs with some ballads. Themes: ??, some good bass work.2 points

Ned? NED RYERSON?! The themes were fabricated so they could build it up like with the previous two albums. Yeah there's some stuff in there hinting at midlife crises, but the lyrics are generally lazy.2 points

I know what grunge is, heard my parents playing it constantly from the ages of 4 to 10 lol. I wouldn't call it a grunge album or anything but like I said I think there's some small elements of it in there. Haha it's just the melodies I think, as well as some shared lyrical themes. Maybe it was more just a sound of the time that you heard in both grunge and pop punk. 1. It sounds like Green Day so it must have something in common2. Plenty of it does, and as a whole it has a retro/rock and roll type edge to it that was clearly part way inspired by Foxboro 3. Not sure if you've noticed but Billie is Green Day's lyricist and as such all of their songs have always been about him!2 points

I only have eyes for his jacket *___* No but seriously, I like him with a beard. The hobbo style2 points

Exactly. That's not what the Trilogy did. As I've said before, the natural evolution from Insomniac to 21st Century Breakdown is obvious, then you get to Uno and it's like, "...oh." As for their changing style being the reason for Mike and Tre taking a backseat, I don't see how that's valid at all. Sure, they can play a supporting role, but that doesn't have to mean their parts need to be totally bland. I don't necessarily expect Mike to use the bass as a lead instrument, but he's a very creative player, so for him to rely so heavily on root notes these days is just weird. I'm sure a few of you here know I'm a massive Rush fan, and there are many, many songs of theirs where the bass is a supporting instrument but there's still real flair there.2 points

I will admit that this does annoy me. I, personally wouldn't want to work with someone like that, but because I don't work with him, it doesn't annoy me. I think I'd be much closer to Mike and Jason, but that doesn't mean Billie and Tre are bad people or that I wouldn't get on with them. Here's a fourth and more plausible explanation: back in the day they only had 3 instruments to work with. This means that those instruments needed to do more things in order to 'fill out' the songs. Ok, there wasn't much lead guitar, but the guitar that was there was very thick and heavy, so that made up for it. But the bass and drum fills were needed to add more depth to the songs. Starting with Warning and the introduction of Jason White, though that changed. Now they have the potential for an acoustic guitar, piano more lead guitar and strings filling out the songs. Bass and drums don't need to be used in the same way they were in previous albums. Now they're used more for foundation that actual filling out. And what happens when the extra instruments are dropped on parts of the Trilogy? The bass comes back. Alright, not as much as on earlier albums, but it's there. I don't think Mike and Tre's lack of bass and drums can be put down to Billie, laziness or undervaluation; their style of music has just changed.2 points

Just because you don't personally like the guitar tone doesn't mean it was bad production.2 points

Y'know, I'm not even saying Billie is a dick. I just don't think I'd connect with him so much in real life. It's weird given how many lyrics he's written that speak to me so deeply, but in personality terms it's different. From what I know obviously, none of us will ever really know what any of them are like as friends.2 points
-
Oh, of course--Billie will never be as big a douchenozzle as Axl Rose, that's for certain.2 points

The fact that Billie is increasingly rendering Green Day into The Billie Joe Show and relegating Mike and Tre to the sidelines, for one. As Tom said, he's also gotten far more pretentious in the last decade or so. And the fact that so many people here are willing to swallow anything he shits out as a message from heaven (his "acting", for one). He's written some great music that I'll always relate to and he got me into rock, and for that I'll always be grateful, but I don't care for him as a person at all.2 points

How anyone can split an album into sections called Heroes & Cons, Charlatans & Saints and Horseshoes & Handgrenades without taking themselves far too seriously is beyond me.2 points
-
Yeah, I agree with this. I respect him as an artist and I wouldn't consider him a bad person or whatever, but he seems really fucking pretentious at times. If I was going to be friends with any of them it'd be Mike.2 points

Yeah, I love it. I've never understood what people don't like about Murder City and LOTAG. They're fucking fabulous, especially compared to the likes of KYE and Christian's Inferno. Ha, maybe I'm not massively keen on the album version of The Static Age but when I saw it live it was a surprising highlight, and utterly fantastic.1 point

Rob should've made Billie turn down the vocal filters a bit as the filters work fine on AI and 21st but when you tone down the sound it sticks out like a sore thumb if Billie felt like he had to have the filters thats fine but they could have adjusted it to fit with the sound used for the trilogy Rob should have piped up on that...1 point

He seems like a very private person if anything. He doesn't seem to "open up" as much as the others do (on Instagram). Not necessarily "private", but maybe reserved is a better way to put it? On the other hand, he does seem very down to earth1 point
