I feel like now would be a good time to post the isolated vocal track from Homecoming. How could anyone ever claim it's anything short of perfect? From Billie's raw intro, to Mike's harmonies throughout most of the song, the filters and delay, Mike and Tre's lead parts... oh my god. This really showcases what sets them apart from other punk bands: backing vocals. The same goes for Jesus of Suburbia. Fantastic.5 points

Past unpopular opinion: "Prosthetic Head" used to be my favorite Green Day album closer.4 points

the "So send my love a letterbomb and visit me in hell" part gives me chills. So fucking good even without the music. Homecoming is just so spectacular. Part I and V (especially the beginning of V) are some of the best work they've done. Jesus Of Suburbia, Holiday, and Homecoming are what should forever place this album above all else.4 points

While we're talking about spectacular vocal performances, I love listening to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4Xgcd-HTCo3 points

The vocal filters on Homecoming are perfect. PERFECT. They have an intangible quality that I just can't explain. And the opening is so good that even casual Green Day fans are hooked on it.3 points

Also regarding Homecoming - best performance of the song: Mainly due to the guy shaking his head in the bottom left at 0.43 and coz it's great to watch Tre drumming in this.2 points

Oh God, without a doubt, I prefer Macy's. I like Good Riddance well enough and its (albeit kind of misguided) sentimentality is lovely, especially at the end of the concerts, but God, Macy's is just, God, I love it so much that I find it difficult to explain exactly why I love it, yknow? Good Riddance is a song you can kind of sing along with a wink and a nod, but the sentiment in Macy's can hit you hard, like you said. It's one of the songs where I most strongly feel like I'm getting a look into Billie's thoughts and feelings; the bridge just feels so melancholy and sometimes gut-punching in its simplicity. I don't crie everytiem, but many tiem2 points

BOB GRUEN HOLY FUCKING SHIT why are your photos so smaaaaaaall Damn you.2 points

Plenty of Green Day songs have witty plays on words, though. That's kind of Billie's thing as a lyricist. Same with music videos, "shenanigans ensue" seems to be a running theme through a lot of their videos - Holiday? American Idiot? Hell, even the bit where he takes the phone off the hook in When I Come Around . The link with Minority makes more sense because they're both political statements on a relatively political album, whereas Walking Contradiction is far more personal.2 points

There's something quite special about Billie's palm muting. He locks in so tightly with Mike and Tre, and his dynamics are so consistent, that it's actually incredibly difficult to replicate. It's a very underrated skill, because in theory it's so simple.2 points

Back to the Edgar Alan Poe conversation, he's taught in most American high schools and is an American literary icon. He's hardly an unknown scholar in the U.S.2 points

I pretty much disagree with all of this haha. If you're the age that Billie was at Kerplunk (high school?) I understand why kerplunk is more relatable, I still relate to Kerplunk too. But I disagree that AI isn't all that relatable. It's extremely relatable in fact and the album isn't about the characters as much as it is about what they represent. Also I think Billie's vocals (and mike's backing vocals) are pretty much at their best throughout American Idiot. The production is great too. She's a Rebel and Extraordinary girl are also better than people give then credit for, to me. Its the rest of the album that make them seem inferior.2 points

My point was that it doesn't matter if a story is a common one, because lots of masterpieces have incredibly common stories. All that matters is that it tells that story well, which, IMHO, AI does.1 point

You're missing my point. The Hero's Journey is a specific story structure, one that Star Wars cribs from almost exactly. Includes: -young everyman is called to action by older mentor -inherits his father's sword -gets companions -performs a rescue -is trained to gain power -goes through an underworld of testing/is captured and escapes -goes to destroy/be reconciled with his father Starting to sound familiar? I think zackjones and I are the only people in this thread who unironically love that song 100% of the time.1 point

Good Riddance is alright. I can see why it's a concert closer, but the album version is nothing special.1 point

Macy's is easily my favourite on Warning. Waiting is pretty good really, top 6 or 7 on the album for me. Gotta agree with Oh Love, it wouldn't work anywhere else on Uno and it's a lot better in context. As for See The Light, it's positioning is perfect and makes the album come full circle. Nice ninja edit1 point
-
Nor have I. I don't think it's special, just fucking awesome. I think maybe it could be that it's so distinctively a closing song in terms of its sound--you couldn't have put it anywhere but the end of the album. Same goes for "Whatsername" and "F.O.D."1 point

I like the Trilogy! And I have no idea why people complain about it. When the secret shows were happening and we were hearing these songs for the 1st time everyone loved it and loved the songs, suddenly the albums come out and half the people change there minds and hate it all of a sudden, 1 year later everyone hates it. And you know why.... Everyone has a short attention span these days, shiny new things are all people seem to want, then when its not new any more everybody hates it and keeps shouting about what they want next. Enjoy the now a little more!1 point

I'm reading a book called Paper Towns by John Green (the guy who wrote The Fault In Our Stars) and there's a bit where the main character has to investigate the bedroom of this girl called Margo. In her record collection she has Green Day albums Just a totally unexpected but awesome surprise1 point

This is shocking to me. I've known Edgar Allen Poe for a long time. Pretty well known in the US. Easily one of the most famous poets to us.1 point
