  1. I agree, Tony. Whether or not Dawn was intentionally deceiving anyone, there's no doubt that your intentions were 100% honorable. As I said to you earlier - people who are honest are easier to deceive than those who are devious themselves. Even the Armstrongs and a lot of the cast of AI believed in Dawn. And none of us really knows how much of what she said was untrue. I do believe a lot of her intentions were good, too. I personally ordered several items from her. Most of them arrived in good condition, though occasionally she seemed to get mixed up about what I'd ordered and sent me something different. When it all balances out, I have no complaints about that part of it. If Dawn has been lying and manipulating people, then I'm very disappointed. But she will be the one who suffers the long-term consequences, if that's the case. I can't help but feel sorry for her. She's obviously quite ill and not a happy person. But your behavior was above reproach, and I'm sorry you have to feel down about all this

  2. A disabled soldier having cancer would have been too easily sensationalized for any media to pass up. There's a reason she didn't mention that. There's also a reason Fox News reported her injury as having taken place at a dentist's office in Texas in 2006. They're absolutely not my news of choice, but they're not dumb enough to print something that is as easily substantiated as that, either. Her previous MOS (military occupational specialty) was listed on her FB page, about a month or two before the AA incident. Google it: 68E, Dental Technician. I completely understand everyone desperately wanting to find some sort of good in this because no one wants to believe they've been taken advantage or made a fool of. I sympathize with Tony a great deal because he shouldn't be made to feel any guilt over supporting what he saw as a worthy cause. I didn't donate any money, but my husband and I did install attic fans in our house on May 28th (as a "green" project). So I participated to that degree. But as soon as I saw that she was trying to raise funds on FB to achieve non-profit tax status, that instantly raised red flags. You don't need to BE an non-profit to DONATE to a non-profit. Just donate directly to the non-profit and skip the middle man. I didn't really take much notice, though, until the American Airlines story came out, and the inconsistencies became glaringly obvious. There are obviously some serious lies involved here - criminal ones - and I doubt very seriously that much of what she has said can be believed at this point. At least I wouldn't believe it until she proves otherwise. People who have told such bold lies are unlikely to tell the truth about less important instances. And for the record, I don't "play law firm." I do that for a living. This is not "fun time" to me. I have only attempted to help people - with absolutely no other motive than I don't like seeing people wronged and I hate liars. The very first person who bought something and received a fake from Dawn was Billie Joe. He bought her story and she gave him a fake Purple Heart.

  3. In all fairness what is important to you may be quite different to what is important to the majority of the fan community. I think there is a big difference in unsubstantiated gossip and real and valid concerns over this whole situation. And I also understand you don't want this to turn into a bashing thread. However, you guys promoted her cause here and on GDA, so you made alot more people aware of it. Did you guys even check into it or check into her? I think this thread is a step in the right direction to at least make people aware of the fact that the whole thing is probably false. Green Day partners with NRDC and all the sudden this GDATW appears, Little Kyle has cancer and gets a call from Billie Joe, all the sudden Dawn has cancer, except no ones knows what kind or what stage its in, Billie Joe makes the news with an airline problem, all the sudden Dawn makes the news with an airline problem. I am not the only one that sees a pattern here. However, this is your forum, your rules. I will respect them even if i disagree with them. I won't say another word unless it's regarding the GDATW and the merchandise people didn't receive

  4. Like most people here, i'm still trying to piece all this together as best i can. Some of the thoughts running through my head now are: - The more this is unfolding, the more concerned i am about how serious it is. Whether that's due to everything blowing up at this time and an element of us all getting a bit ahead of ourselves, or, that in fact this whole thing was a complete scam from the very start. - I believe the answer may lie somewhere in the middle. I've said before, and i do believe this, Dawn was trying to do some good with this and i believe there were good intentions. - Was the motivation behind the whole project a way to get closer to the band personally, for Dawn? Quite possibly. Is that wrong? I'm not so sure. If it was all for a good cause and seen through properly to completion, i think it would have been a hugely good thing, regardless of the motivation behind it. - I feel a high level of responsibility, because i actively promoted the project believing (early on) that it was for a good cause. I had some skepticism about it from the start, but this was outweighed by the promising early developments. - The original thread for this project showed signs of skepticism from some quarters, very early on, and that put some doubt in my mind certainly, but i guess i wanted to believe, again, it was a good thing. - I feel this could be an extreme example of the irrational lengths fans can go to, to try and get noticed by the band they love. It's something i think many, if not all of us, experience in some way with our love for this band. As i said, i think this could be an extreme example of that. - I still tend to believe that Dawn's situation is unique and may deserve some sympathy. I saw a lot of her first hand, staying with her in trips to New York for the musical. She showed me shrapnel wounds in her head from her war injuries, i don't see right now how she could have gone to such lengths to make all this up. Having said that, it does appear quite likely that stories have been twisted/exaggerated. - I also believe that Dawn is very ill at the moment, her recent disappearance from facebook (and here, but a longer time ago) leaves a lot of questions, unfortunately unanswered. I was surprised she didn't go to the texas show, but maybe her situation is worse than we all know. - All of this could already be beyond what we are speculating. Her recent actions have made national news in the US, so it may already be taken up to a large extent. - What can WE do now? I think we should focus mainly on trying to help the people that have been directly impacted by the collapse of the project. I feel i let that down to some extent with my involvement. My only excuse is it became more and more difficult to contact, and get answers from Dawn, until this point where i have practically zero contact with her. With that said i want to help as much as i can from this point to get this to the best resolution possible. I think as a community, together we can all help to get to that end goal.

  5. You're right that the only people who might consider themselves "injured" by what potentially has happened here are anyone who bought something and didn't receive it, or anyone who donated money or goods and had no idea if their donation was used properly. BUT there is some impact on many of the members of this forum who trusted and perhaps admired the person Dawn presented herself as here. No one wants to be manipulated and made a fool of, and there is some rather damning evidence that most of the things she said about her experiences as a soldier and the circumstances regarding her injury are fabricated. People will want to discuss this situation - it's a bit much to ask them to limit themselves to discussion about GDATW gone bad when they may have some angry feelings about being duped - but they should be able to do it in a respectful way.

  6. Thank you for doing this I personally haven't bought or won anything so I don't have any stories about that. I do have some thoughts about this, but they are probably considered gossip so I will put them in a spoiler. I am not pulling conclusions because I know she's allegedly been very ill (saying "allegedly" only because there is no concrete proof, not because I have grounded doubts about it), but I've noticed it and I'm wondering whether I'm being unnecessarily and overly suspicious. I'd like to conclude with saying that I hope I'm wrong and Dawn just got a bit disorganized and that's the reason of all of this, because the idea of GDATW was a wonderful initiative.

  7. I hope they give the album a name that isn't also the name of a song. Even though it's sometimes appropriate to do that it's never gonna be as interesting as having a different name.

  8. It would be my recommendation to people who purchased things on eBay or Amazon and did not receive those items to contact the Killeen, Texas (seller's location) Sheriff's Department or the Bell County Texas District Attorney ( www.bellcountytx.com/da/home.htm ) and report it as theft. If you have paid for something that was not delivered and tried to contact the seller to no avail, there's no other term for it. You should also report it to Paypal, eBay and or/Amazon, but since these purchases are likely outside of their 30-day window of protection, they won't be able to help you much (nor will you be able to get your money back from them). Although most of these amounts may be quite small, enough reports of the same thing will raise eyebrows to the District Attorney's office. I'm sure they could and would pursue multiple charges of the Texas equivalent of Theft under $500, which is a misdemeanor in most states. If you do decide to do this, be sure to have all of your facts correct (date of purchase, amount of purchase, proof of such, etc.) lined up before calling and don't waste their time. Don't go into great detail about it being Green Day merchandise, the drama around GDATW, and unnecessary info when making your report, but be sure to provide any pertinent information. Law enforcement officers tend to disregard people who they feel like are only whining or wasting their time. It would also be helpful to have Dawn's address when you call so that they know where to find her. I'm sure that someone who actually received their merchandise has her address. Please feel free to message me if you have any questions about that process.

  9. Update December 2, 2011: In light of new facts, here's a new thread open for discussion about everything related to this. Issues were brought forward to us about the Green Day Across The World charity event, so we hope to address them as best we can. I do want to clarify right away that GDA had very limited involvement with this, aside from promoting the event itself (the May 28th clean-up) and the NYC meet-up. We didn't actually have any role with any of the donation requests or selling any items for charity for this. We saw it as a really cool idea to engage fans and do some good in communities around the world, and that's why we decided to promote it. Over the last few months, concerns have been raised about some of the items that were listed for sale by "Green Day Across The World" on Amazon or eBay. Some people were promised prizes from the May 28th clean-up that hadn't arrived and others placed ordered never delivered. We do know that some people got the items they were expecting, but it is impossible for us to know with certainty all the details surrounding this because we didn't have direct involvement. We've tried reaching out to Dawn to get answers, as others have done as well. These have not proven successful, so we've decided to close the original GDATW threads so that people are no longer directed toward any of the charity links or sales (though my understanding is that some have already been removed). There are honest concerns people have, and the lack of communication has been unhelpful. We simply don't have the answers, because none of us knew enough of what was going on to actually know. If anyone placed an order through Amazon or eBay and didn't receive their items, please get in touch with us (you can email me directly, andres@greendayauthority.com). We can't make promises about getting your items or money back, but we do want to try and gain a better understanding of the whole situation, and help our users as best we can. It's hard for us to really make sense of the entire thing because this was organized completely outside of GDA's involvement, but we do want to make sure we're looking after Green Day fans after so many pulled together to make this event happen.

  10. Yeah the idea of encouraging people to spend a day doing stuff to help the environment/environmental charities once a year is great (and isn't something that's open to scams either). There was never anything dodgy about that aspect of it. It's just the rest of it....

  11. Ok so I don't mean to sound horrible but, as this woman has pretty much lied about everything (well, I've come to that conclusion, personally) how can you believe the whole cancer thing?! If she had started her treatment 6months ago, I don't believe she would have been fit enough to fly to NYC to try and get into a Green Day show. Also it wouldn't be hard for her to cut her hair shorter and say that her hairs growing back. Especially as you dont see regular pictures of her. Also do you not think that these reporters wouldve been the first to put about her being in remission or something to do with her cancer in the stories they wrote up about her urinating herself on a plane?! So don't take offence, but some of you sound like youre in denial about the whole situation. It's just an observation but maybe you guys just don't wanna believe someone could do something like this. Especially about the whole military service, that makes me sick.

  13. Wait, there's seriously still people on GDC who trust and believe everything that Dawn has told them, regardless of what she's done ...? Jesus, people. Actions speak louder than words, and if you're turning a blind eye to everything this ridiculous woman has done, then I pity you greatly. Open your eyes and wake up! A very early example: One of the first threads Dawn ever made on GDC was filled with outright lies. She stole images of random eBay DIY artists' creations and claimed that they were her own. 'After many trials and errors I think I finally got the knack of it,' and, 'Here are some samples of items I have made,' she stated in the original thread. The proof is fairly easy to find. Most of the items shown in the stolen images are no longer sold on eBay, aside from this one seller who continues to make them, and has been since 2006. Dawn's older stolen images don't match the seller's new images exactly, but you can clearly see that the mannequin and the necklace the mannequin is wearing is identical. And in case anyone wants to argue this fact: The eBay seller most certainly didn't steal the images from Dawn, as they wouldn't have such excellent feedback on eBay if this was the case. There's also no way Dawn would have the identical mannequin and necklace as the eBay seller. And if Dawn's intention was to simply purchase these eBay items and then resell them, then why did she go to such great lengths to pretend she made them herself ...? The worst part is that Dawn continued to do this to try and 'raise money for GDATW' on her Amazon store, which prompted me to post a comment about it on the GDA news post at the time.

  14. I doubt that, to be honest. If you're seriously ill, you don't take the time to delete all your online profiles, you just go to hospital. Seems more like a cover-up than anything else.

  16. Tony, I don't think you should feel a high level of responsibility for this whole thing going sideways. You weren't the only one taken in by any means. GDA/GDC wasn't even the first place to promote Dawn and GDATW, it was just the most frequented place. You're only guilty of trying to be helpful with what you thought was an admirable and worthy cause and in the process, your involvement gave Dawn credibility she probably didn't deserve. But you're right - no one knows the whole story. I doubt we ever will hear the whole truth. If she is ill, I hope she feels better soon and comes online to address all the questions.

  18. I will end your life. Anyway, I'm guessing Nuclear Family, just cause they seem to start with their title songs during live shows. But that's 100% speculation.

  19. I'll admit, I haven't really kept up with Dawn, though I did meet her and talk to her quite a few times during my stay in New York back in February. She seemed to be a very nice, sweet person who just wanted to raise awareness for people to get involved in helping the environment with Green Day's work with NRDC as an inspiration. I remember her telling me how much she paid to rent the room for the party she was throwing and for drinks, and prizes, and a DJ, and trophies, etc. She worked really hard to pull that stuff together and it turned out to be a pretty amazing night for those of you who went and remember. I don't know her well enough to know if the charity was a scam, but from what I've witnessed when I've spoken with her, I don't think that was ever her intention. I won something for being a team leader for GDATW, and haven't gotten it, but to be honest I don't even really care. The fact that I was inspired to go and clean the environment was reward enough for me. People make mistakes and sometimes people get confused on what's right and wrong.. I can't make excuses for why many people's purchases have yet to be delivered. I just tend to hope for the best and put too much trust in people. I hope I'm right in this case, and I hope that everyone gets what they paid for and we can all move on from this.

  21. So I compleltely understand where you are coming from Andres. But do you not think that these people deserve to know what sort of person she is. Especially as some of the people on this forum have helped her out and have thought of her as a friend. The person behind the 'scam' surely has as much to do with the actual scam.
    2 points
  22. It just sucks, that's all. I don't feel responsible for it, but I do feel badly. But also as Oda said, she did do some incredible things, like the tickets and the party and those wonderful trophies like the one that sits on my windowsill as well as a few other's windowsills around the world. And even if it was a scam, the GDATW idea is pretty great, despite everything else that may have gone along with it. One of the last times she wrote to me, she said her fellow Green Day fans were like her family. It's just kinda crazy, the entire thing.

  23. Just a thought for the sake of productivity for those poor FB folks who aren't on GDC but were 'victimized'... could someone who is a member of the FB page perhaps post a link there to GDC for those individuals who may be looking for answers/help getting their items? I know it's not GDC's responsibilities to take on the entire population of scammed fans who aren't even members here, but if most GDCers here weren't duped, and people outside have no guidance, it's up to you guys if you want to help these 'strangers'... and perhaps gain some new members in the process

  24. No one should feel guilty about believing her. She did in fact do some very nice things like giving away tickets and throwing the party in NY.

  25. No one WANTS to believe anyone could do something like this, because it's completely disgusting.

  26. Mallory, in fairness, you called BS on this from pretty much the beginning. With the items sold, there's definitely something fishy. At the same time, i personally saw Dawn handing out those items as displayed on the mannequin for free to people in New York. People tried to offer her money and she refused to accept it. I saw that with my own eyes. I'm not here to defend Dawn entirely, because there is a lot wrong here, but i'd like to add some perspective.

  27. She may have been/was seriously ill at some point, but seeing as she took a long flight recently and was able to give an interview to media, (and apparently also has time and resources to set up donation pages to pay a notary to get GDATW registered as a charity), I doubt she's still very ill right now. She said people and companies gave some of those items to her/to GDATW to sell for charity.

  28. I'd like that too, it would be just like in the old times they used to have kickass titles for albums back in the 90s. Not that American Idiot, Warning and 21stCB aren't good titles, just I like much more those old ones.

  30. As I said, these are all completely valid concerns, and I don't mean to seem like asking people not to talk about something important. But I also don't want us to be part of people organizing and getting their pitchforks when we don't have all the facts. Yes, there's definitely some screwy stuff going on, but what I'm actually concerned about at this point is not promoting the event any further, and helping anyone directly affected. That's what's important to me, that's what I want to focus on.
    1 point
  31. That's all the personal stuff that I don't think we need to focus on. What's important to me is that if anyone really was ripped off, that we help them sort it out. I understand the concerns raised about Dawn's situation, and all fair concerns, but I honestly don't want those to become the focus of what we're trying to do right now.

  32. First off. I'm not trying to shit stir. I am merely trying to bring some facts to light. There are some links below that have some comments attached to them that are quite interesting. I shall say no more. I'll leave it to yourselves to make your own opinions on this matter. http://www.armywtfmoments.com/disabled-soldier-sat-in-urine-soaked-wheelchair In this set of comments there are some genuine concerns raised about numerous things, especially by the person who used to work with her. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/11/01/dawn-wilcox-disabled-vete_n_1069197.html And this one has quite a few opinions about her story.

  35. During 7th hour we were peer-editing some papers and my teacher started playing some music. He played "Novocaine" and "BOBD" twice, but stopped it after "Read between the lines what's FUCKED up..." both times because he didn't realize the song came back on. I sit sort of by his desk so I started talking to him about Green Day. He asked me what song to play next as long as it doesn't have cussing. I suggested "The Grouch" and was no longer allowed to give input on the class soundtrack.
