Only of You was included on 1039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours, which was released by Lookout! Records. It was produced by Andy Ernst and Green Day and recorded at Art of Ears Studio, San Francisco. 1039/SOSH is a combination of the vinyl EPs Slappy and 1,000 Hours. First released in 1990, it was later re-released in January 2004 by Warner Brothers. It was then re-mastered and re-released on Reprise Records and Epitaph Europe in 2007. This album is the only entire Green Day album that features John Kiffmeyer (aka Al Sobrante) on drums. He later left the band and was replaced with Tre Cool. 1039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours has been certified Gold. As Billie says in the featured video, this is one of the first songs he ever wrote. Simply reading the lyrics doesn’t give a complete impression of this lovely song. Something about the melody is so hauntingly sweet and evocative of that feeling of yearning for someone … someone unreachable. My favorite lyric is, “I wish I could tell you, but the words would come out wrong.” What’s yours? And one of the reasons 1039 is so fantastic to me is because it has love as it's central motif, demonstrating that Billie Joe has always been a most romantic man, even before "80" came along. As I watch the video that J'net picked for this post, I can't help but notice how proudly Billie speaks of this song, and that sort of takes me back to Gilman's argument for not booking the band in the first place: "Your songs are too mellow, it's not punk enough". I can't possibly imagine where that argument comes from, since when I listen to this, I can't help being filled with energy and the urge to dance along to it, just like of the genre's best. The song has personal significance to me as well, so I may be a little biased, when I met the love of my life (way before she knew of my existence), this was the soundtrack to the feeling being born into my heart… "Oh if you only knew the way I felt for so long. It was one of the songs I never imagined I would get to hear live! and I agree with you J'net “I wish I could tell you, but the words would come out wrong.” those are my favorite lyrics as well! I believe everybody has felt that way at least once... think about your first crush, your first boyfriend/girlfriend, your first real kiss... It shows up that scary feeling of truly opening your heart for the very first time and not being able to express it right. But then, BJ puts up this amazing line "The first time I caught a glimpse of you, then all my thoughts were only of you" The next verse is about the concern that unavoidably awaits after you decide to go for it and open your heart out: "what if she/he freaks out and begins acting weird with me?" or "what if she/he places me in the friend zone and i never get to have a chance?" and the rest of bittersweet panic attacks that come along in that big rollercoaster that is falling in love Plus, the melody!!!!! It's even more expressive than the whole lyrics, it makes you wanna sing along, dance, go crazy, but the same time go and cry your heart out.... and hearing it live makes it even better :wub: Aaaand that's what I think about it hehe Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I think what I like most about the song is that just about anyone can relate to it at some point in his/her life. I also think it makes Billie Joe seem so sweet and vulnerable - not the 'rock star' kinda song, just a regular guy singing about regular guy stuff. It's got something, something that makes it... One of the best songs on the album, one of their best songs from all their albums, and my favorite song at the moment (with Welcome to Paradise being a close second). I agree with J'net, I just read the lyrics on there own and they're so simple, but when you listen to the song it turns into something else entirely. As i explained in the voting thread for it, i really wanted this song to be picked as a mark for what was happening this time last year. i always feel it's one of those songs thats forgotten about in the likes of Paper Lanterns and other songs shadows and is often extremely underrated. I think it's a lot like When it's Time as it shows Billie as being a true man and just being himself without the typical stereotype of hard punk that was put on Green Day at the beginning. all in all, i love this song Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

There was a time I didn't listen to it at all for some reason but it grew on me quite a lot. They played it once last year, didn't they? I can't find a video, though.
