pasalaska
To help get you into a partying mood for New Year's Eve/New Year's Day, this week’s Song of the Week is the dance-inducing Stop Drop and Roll by Green Day’s side-band the Foxboro Hot Tubs. Stop Drop and Roll is the first track off the album of the same name, originally released free online in December 2007, and then later released on various formats in April 2008. The original downloadable version of the song was preceded by the quote ‘oh baby, aren’t you something?’ taken from the 1966 movie Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, starring Elizabeth Taylor. In true Hot Tubs style, this song is all about being young, care-free, somewhat boozy and losing your inhibitions. It’s also about sex – I’m not going to quote one single line because the entire song is one big allusion to it. The music, though, is what really makes this song tick – the 60’s rock’n roll sound with the tinny, distorted guitars and the driving, punctuated beat topped off with the Reverend Strychnine Twist’s growling vocals make it a hit with Green Day fans and non-Green Day fans alike. Here’s an awesome live performance of Stop Drop and Roll from June 2009 on the TV show Last Call with Carson Daly. And here’s the official video that was never officially released. See if you can spot the Chihuahua. Lyrics: Sixteen and a son of a bitch Got a gun and a strychnine twitch Little girl on the graveyard shift Out of control and doesn't give a shit I don't wanna go down. I don't wanna go down. Gonna lose control! I don't wanna go down. I don't wanna go down. So stop, drop, and roll. So, baby-doll, don't you lose your touch. You take it all cause you're never gonna take too much. Dirty mouth and the look of death. My tequila coming' from your breath. Your lips are like a cherry bomb with teeth. Losing control, break my sanity. I don't wanna go down. I don't wanna go down. Gonna lose control! I don't wanna go down. I don't wanna go down. So stop, drop, and roll. So, baby-doll, don't you lose your touch. You take it all cause you're never gonna take too much. I don't wanna go down. I don't wanna go down. You’re gonna lose control! I don't wanna go down. I don't wanna go down. So stop, drop, and roll. Alright So, baby-doll, don't you lose your touch. You take it all 'cause you're never gonna take too... Losing control and you lose your touch. You take it all, 'cause you're never gonna take too much. ********************************************************************************************************* You can nominate songs for discussion as Song of the Week in the SotW Nominations and Archive thread, which contains links to each previous Song of the Week in its first post. Karen.
I adore this song, I adore the sound. As an intro to the Tubbies, within 10 seconds, I knew I was going to love the whole thing.
Hermione
Fuck yeah , I can't express how much I love this song! Hearing it for the first time was the best surprise ever, it was like WOW what's this?! It made me want to jump up and go swing dancing in an old time diner or something . I just adore the raw energy and groovy 60s style and killer lyrics, Dirty mouth and a look of death, your tequila coming from my breath would have to be my favourite. It was the perfect introduction to the Foxies, announcing their arrival with a bang. The video is absolutely perfect too, it really epitomizes what FBHT is all about and I'm so glad we've been able to see it. Also whenever I hear it I'm reminded of probably the best thing that happened at the London Foxies show - them playing Stop Drop And Roll 6 times! They'd never done the playing a song loads of times thing before so it was a total wonderful surprise when, having already opened the show with it, they came back after the encore and played it 4 times in a row (trying to play it better each time ). I couldn't believe it each time they announced they were gonna do it "one more time", it was just pure fun and happiness and I would've been happy for them to play it all night. I remember watching Gerg singing it enthusiastically to one of the cameras that they were filming the show with, I'd love to see that video lol. Then later they played it one final time right at the end which was a perfect end to the show. Thanks to that night I still feel a rush of excitement whenever I hear this song. Here's them having some very amusing banter before playing it for the last time. Sums up all the fun of the Foxies shows and music for me

November's Storms
I found my copy of the Stop Drop and Roll!!! album in a bargain bin in my local xtravision (usuallly known for movie rentals!), so I was pleasantly surprised! As soon as I stuck it on and heard this song I knew I was in for a hell of a ride! This is just a rip-roaring, party-like-theres-no-tomorrow, ass kicking beast of a song! Only these guys could combine punk with rock n roll so well. For me its the best song on the album.

lizziebix
I never heard of the FBHT until I joined GDC. And for the longest time I had no idea who people were talking about. After some digging around, I went straight to Amazon and bought the CD. I was so excited to hear all their songs that I had to share them with my hubby. (He, btw, is not a fan, while I still am!) I found it so interesting that a huge band like Green Day would put together this crazy little alias band and be so interesting with the songs and shows. Although I've never seen the FBHT live, just knowing that Stop, Drop and Roll is one of the songs the band loves to play over and over again makes me love it all the more. btw...it seemed more appropriate that my 10K post should be in this thread, since the FBHT made me love Green Day all the more and that's the real reason I joined GDC. justcause
Fucking love this song - it kicks ass from the get-go and it never lets up. The jangley backwards-sounding guitar intro, the ominous build-up of the drums, The Rev's raspy vocal that sounds like he's been screaming all night, the wildcat howls, the whole thing lurching around the rock'n'roll core - it all sets the tone for a record where everything's off-kilter, delirious, merry-fucking-hell and heaven at the same time. Stop Drop and Roll is like Elvis wandered out of Graceland some moonlit nite and got it on with a banshee. It takes the basic elements of a classic rock'n'roll song and screws with it, so it feels like all those elements are floating apart and coming together in different ways. The lyrics are dirty and ferocious - and at the same time somehow uplifting, because, fuck, this is Green Day - so it feels like the subtext of many's the cute-sounding 50's song is being exposed. 'You take it all cause you're never gonna take too much' - like, don't go making demands on me, babydoll, you own me cause you don't try to own me. It's clear who's calling the shots here. Look of death, graveyard shift, strychnine twitch - lol, this is a netherworld romance, no holds barred. This song is surface-simple, with the strength of expression that comes with that, but jeez, it's a million shades of irony and contradiction and comment on the cannon and the culture. All of that in the pure, impulsive, unselfconscious move of a great mind - fucking, fucking ROCKS!! I love the 'take control /lose control' thing, fight-surrender - that's important, it's something bigger. C'mon now Sally, take a risk and it'll work out right. I love this song - I love the whole fucking record, it's dark and magical and beautiful, and fuckit, Hot Tubs is the band Green Day wants to be. Who wouldn't follow The Rev, anywhere he wants to go? GreenRanger
Honestly I think this is my favorite Hot Tubs song. I feel like it catches the spirit of the band really well...it's got a really really 50s/60s classic rock thing going on. I've always wanted to cover this song...how fun would it be to get all hyped up during that intro and then finally come in with "sixteen and a son of a bitch!" to a crowd of people who probably aren't expecting something so old school sounding? There's a reason the album was called Stop Drop and Roll, and it's because this song personifies the feel of the whole thing in most classic way possible. It's clear who's calling the shots here. I took line on a purely literal (sexual) basis, it seemed pretty one dimensional to me! Probably shows more about how my mind works than the Rev's
Tubbie Head
I really love this song, it's such an amazing way to start the great Stop Drop and Roll album! I feel like I need to start dancing every time I hear it It's just perfect, always makes me smile (much like all of the other songs from the Tubbies), it might be my favourite from the album... Just because of the awesome melodies! But I don't know I love them all (LOVE THE VIDEO TOO)

Karen.
Not only that, it was €3! Amazing - mine was €17 in HMV - which sucked. Although it is sort of a crime that it should be given away for that price!
greendaytone
This song took a while to grow on me. Then when Foxboro Hot Tubs played it 7 times in one show in London, i really began to dig it! Edit: 6 times Hermione? I thought that might be the case. I like the number 7 though, so i'm gonna argue they played it that many times
Isabel
Who wouldn't follow The Rev, anywhere he wants to go? Not me! (even though that's a double negative) I heard them play this song in Manchester on October 31st 2009. But oddly enough, whenever I listen to it I'm reminded more of the second time I saw them in Manchester, in June 2010. Why is this?! It's not really one of my favourite songs from the album but it's still amazing.
