Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt was at the bottom
«It could only be better in my life»

With Green Day, bassist Mike Dirnt has sold over 75 million CDs worldwide. But it was not always bright for him - the punk rockers had a hard start into life.

BLICK: Why is it still cool to be in a rock band at 44?
Mike Dirnt: Because at any age, it's cool to make music. Music can not be physically touched but touched by it. It can make us laugh or cry. It can euphorize us, but also can be tuned deeply ... Music comes closest to magic.

They have been rocking for almost thirty years. Surprised that you have been so long?
Quitting was never an option. It is the same as when someone asks you how long you intend to run. No idea, you just make it simple. And is glad that it still works.

What is different today than in the 80s?
In the digital age everyone has a huge selection. What makes music interchangeable. Before, we had to sit for hours on the radio to listen to a song we liked. This gave you a much closer relationship with songs.

Was there never a plan B in your life?
I come from the bottom. It could only get better in my life. My mother had problems with drugs. I was released for adoption. At 15, I went away from home, then worked on the construction, cook was in a sea fish restaurant and have been shipped for UPS packages. Survival was never a problem for me, hard not to work either. Had it not worked with Green Day, I would have done differently.

They have three children today. How did you change paternity?
On the one hand, the children kept me young. On the other hand, let us mature earlier. You become more responsive when you suddenly do not have to look for yourself.

When were you the happiest?
Probably right now. I have a great family. And my band still shoots from all cylinders. I'm not a nostalgic guy, I do not look back often. Life is a journey. I want to know as much as I can. I would not succeed if I continued to mourn the past.

What was the worst moment of your life?
There are some. I've lost several close friends over the years. But it was also bad, when we found out that my wife Brittney has breast cancer. She had chemotherapy and had to undergo surgery. Luckily she is now better.

Your favorite leisure activity?
I own a coffee company in North California for over a year. Since I am involved in everything, the taste development, the distribution et cetera. I love this work!

What is better: Facebook or Twitter?
Instagram! A picture is worth as much as a thousand words. I have no time for too many words.

If you could be someone else for a day, who would it be?
My dear wife. Then I would eventually understand her (laughs).

Who is or was the greatest rock star ever?
Elvis Presley, very clear. And maybe David Bowie. Both were nobody and became universal icons. They are worshiped in virtually every culture in this world. Not a bad performance, I think.
